Chapters to adventure: A five minute freewrite

Below is a five minute (maybe a smidge more) freewrite from today's prompt by @mariannewest:

Chapter after chapter after chapter! Eliza threw the book across the room. When I signed up for this, I didn’t expect to be reading all this junk! She thought as she covered her head with her hands. She wanted to lie down on the bed and go to sleep, but she was already on the bed. The single chair in her small room proved too uncomfortable for reading, so she’d settled down on her slightly less uncomfortable bed. Live the life they said, excitement and adventure around every corner! What a crock. I mean, who even uses books anymore? It’s archaic.

The door rang a series of short beeps before opening. A man stalked in, looked around the room and settled his eyes on the book.

“I see you’re enjoying your training.”

“That’s not training, it’s draining,” she replied.

Unamused, the man continued, “The reading is required before you can move on the next checkpoint. Don’t be concerned though, some portion of the group never makes it. I can arrange transport back to Earth immediately.” He nodded at her slightly and turned to leave.

“No! I came here for what they promised - the action and adventure. I’m not going back to that hellhole I called a life, not now not ever.”

He paused where he was and didn’t move.

“Well? When is that going to happen? Or is this a bunch of bullshit to mess with people?”

Still he remained motionless. What an asshole! He won’t even answer me.

Ever so slightly, his head moved so he could look at the book on the floor. He stared at it, never blinking. Is this guy even human?

“Fine! I’ll read the damn books.” His gaze still didn’t move. “Ugh!” she said as she got up from the bed and picked up the book. “The next one better be more interesting than this piece of crap.” She waved it in his face. He never flinched. When she reached the bed and opened the book again, he strode out of the room.

“Freaking robot!”

The door slid closed but a voice came over the speakers in her room, “I heard that.”
