Our Nest, The Earth - Freewrite Day 584 Entry & SBI Giveaway - Prompt: Nest

in #freewrite5 years ago (edited)

The Earth is like a nest for humanity, and really all of the other life forms that we share this planet with. It brought life itself up from basic organic molecules into complex, self-aware beings. Over the course of its existence, it has been a nest for an uncountably vast amount of life.

But humanity is destroying this nest. This haven for life in the universe. We’re pulling out the twigs that our world was built from, kicking the nest to shambles, and killing ourselves and everything else in the process.

We are not yet mature enough to leave our nest. Maybe someday, we’ll be able to spread our wings and fly off into the universe. But I sincerely hope that when that day comes, we’ll leave our nest in a pristine, healthy state, in such a way that it will continue onward into the future as a testament to where humanity came from.

Hi there friends :)

It’s been a very long time since my last FreeWrite. I think the previous one I did was for day 508. I have no idea where the time went honestly, but I am hoping to get back into writing these regularly.

Lately I have been doing a lot of reading about the dire straits that our planet is in. The pollution, the environmental destruction, the species loss, the plastic waste, all of these things cumulate into the widespread destruction of the only place in the universe that we know can sustain life. I don’t think most people think of it that way. The callousness that I see people address these issues really horrifies me but there is not much that I can do unfortunately. I guess I just wanted to express some of these feelings with this freewrite.

Here is a gorgeous picture of a nest that I found on Unsplash. Hopefully, like these little birds will do, humanity will emerge from the shell of destruction we are in to a better, more sustainable society.

I am also going to be making my Freewrite’s an SBI giveaway. This is a way to reward my fellow Freewriter’s, and hopefully motivate me to do daily Dreewrite’s again. No promises on that, but I am going to make an attempt.

What you need to do to enter is simply comment on this post with a link to your freewrite. I will then assign you a number, and when I write the next post, I will pick using a random number generator. There’s no need to resteem or upvote, though it would be helpful to allow me to do this contest for longer.

Until next time,

Aloha

This is my response to the Freewrite prompt, a daily writing exercise that I am really enjoying doing. Thank you @mariannewest for hosting these.

But humanity is destroying this nest.

I like making this comparison: Humanity is in its teenage years, rebelling against what nurtured us, struggling to find our identity, our role in life itself.

I doubt that mankind in it's current state will play a significant role in destroying the world, that's just our teenage brains attributing everything in the world to ourselves.

We're just creating a big old mess in our room and making life miserable for ourselves... we'll get past that... it might take another millennium or a few until we grow up, but I trust we'll get there.

I dunno. I think that our role in life has become fairly clear as of late: a virus. self replicating beyond the point of sustainability to the detriment of the host.

I mean, if you look at deforestation, at species loss, at plastic waste in the oceans, at the collapsing fish populations, at the vast insect die offs, I find it very difficult to say we aren't destroying life on the planet. Sure, we probably won't kill off everything before humanity kills itself, but there's a reason that we're in the 6th mass extinction.

I certainly hope it won't take that long. I doubt the planet could take another hundred years of business as usual.

I guess, being a part of an organization that disseminates climate crisis information has not made dealing with any of this easier. But everything I've encountered lately points very clearly at major problems occurring, and soon, if we don't change things.

Well, earth seem to pretty good in dealing with those mass extinctions, after all, we're already doing the 6th one ;)

I don't want to downplay the fact of how ruthless this teenage humankind is treating the world it's living in, but everything has it's place in the universe and I do believe that it will be a worthwhile lesson for future generations.

I doubt we'll be able to kill ourselves off entirely, we'll probably survive in misery and small numbers without the ability to cause anymore significant harm.

But I also think we as humans suffer from visions of grandeur, incredibly overestimating our own role and influence in things.

Haha I mean, sure, the earth itself does fine, but species loss is pretty insane. Especially if the planet's climate gets shifted to more of a hothouse planet. Runaway climate change may make that happen.

I guess it may be a good lesson. I hope people will be around to learn it.

That may be true. It's just sad because it is wildly unnecessary and avoidable, if there is concerted global effort.

I don't know about that. There are micro plastics that have been found in fish in the deepest abysses of the oceans, and everywhere on the planet you can find pollution in the air. So we are definitely having a global impact.

Great, you join. I am afraid the best will look like a heap of shit or is vandalized if we ever fly away.

I wish you 💥 and 💞

Well that's why I say we're not mature enough to leave yet. Hopefully by the time we can, we'll leave the earth in a good situation.
