A Dragon's Tale - Freewrite Day 498 Entry - Weekend Single Prompt: Dragon Breath

This is my response to the Freewrite prompt, a daily writing exercise that I am really enjoying doing. Thank you @mariannewest for hosting these.
I’ve been challenging myself to make all of the freewrites I do match a particular theme. So far, I have made them about wild animals that tend to get a bad reputation, and am finding it to be a very enjoyable challenge. I’d be curious if anyone else had any other suggestions.

Prompt: “Dragon Breath”
The komodo dragon trundled along the path, his long body swaying back and forth as he made his way towards the clearing. He was still waking up, a little colder than would be ideal, and wanted to get to his favorite basking spot as quickly as possible.
To his horror, when he made his way to the clearing, he saw another dragon, sitting on his rock! He ran up to it, snarling, the drool hanging from his mouth flying everywhere in his haste. The other dragon cracked up one of his eyes, seeing the challenger, and huffed. He rolled away from the oncoming dragon, utterly dismissing the threat of a challenge. Unfortunately, the dragon on the rock was substantially larger, so there was not much that could be done. Saddened, he made his way to another, smaller rock that was not as well lit.
Laying down, enjoying the heat from the sun and the rock, his mind quickened as his blood began flowing more rapidly. He had a brilliant idea. Now all he had to do was put it into action. He got off of the rock, and made his way back over to the spot thief.
As he walked, he did some deep breathing, filling his lungs deeply each time, trying to expand as much as he could. Right before getting to the other dragon, he inhaled as much as he could. And then, right when he got next to the other dragon’s face, he exhaled, blowing his dragon breath out slowly but forcefully.
He was trying to gas out the other dragon. Having just recently eaten, his mouth was filled with some putrid stuff. Hopefully this would be enough to make the other dragon want to leave. And to his delight, it was. The larger dragon made a disgusted face, wiggled around a few times, and then got up off the rock and walked away. He didn’t want to tangle with something that smelled that bad.
Celebrating his victory, the komodo dragon crawled up onto his favorite rock, and basked in the brilliant glow of the sun.
I’ve always been really fascinated by dragons, dinosaurs, and reptiles in general. Komodo dragons are about the closest we have to something like. I thought that would make for a fitting subject of the freewrite.
The scenario in this story is almost guaranteed to be impossible. Komodo’s mouths are all so nasty that their bites are essentially venomous. They deliver such a high dose of bacteria that it’s almost always lethal. I have to imagine that it would also smell very foul, but I don’t know for sure. However, even though they are among the largest reptiles on the planet, they still have to bask in the sun for their warmth, and I thought it would help make them a bit more relatable. I hope that you enjoyed this story.
