Day 758: 5 Minute Freewrite: Sunday - Prompt: trip

in #freewrite5 years ago

This is my post for #freewrite Sunday prompt trip hosted by @mariannewest

When I was young my Dad was involved with politicians of some sort. When he went on a trip to these meetings he took us with him. The earliest trip that I remember was to St Louis Mo. We meet the grandson or great-grandson, I am not sure which he was, of Judge William Roy Bean he was known as the hanging judge, that is the only reason I remember him, He had the same name as his grandfather. I could not tell you who the other people were but I do remember going to the Budweiser Co and getting a tour of their place.

On the next trip we went to was to the Capital of Alabama I met George Wallace and his wife, I have autograph pictures of them, they were very nice and us kids had free run of the building which had winding staircases and each floor you could look down and see all the seats where they had their meetings. I can still see it in my head.

We went to Hot Springs Arkansas and stayed at the Arlinton Hotel, Dad had a room that adjoined another room and a large living room, it was the biggest hotel room I had ever been in. The hotel had an elevator operator but I can not remember his name. He became a friend to all of us kids and we found out he had false teeth. We told Dad we wanted to buy him a gift, so Dad gave us some money. Being kids and never knowing anyone with false teeth we thought poly grip would be a nice gift, we did not know what it did but knew it was for false teeth. We gave him our gift and he just loved it, we were so happy that we had given him something that he loved. Not till years later did I know what poly grip was for and felt bad for giving him that for a gift of friendship.

@steemitboard thank you. have a great day.

You met the grandson or great-grandson of Judge William Roy Bean, the infamous hanging judge--wow! A writer (known only online to me) says she is a descendant of Geronimo, but that his grandson (her father or grandfather) was a jerk (and a rapist!) and she's glad she didn't know him.

What a great story about the gift of Polident (poly grip) and how graciously the elevator operator accepted it! Oh the innocence of children!

The brewery at St. Louis, with the Clydesdale barn, and the free samples - back in the day, before I was diagnosed gluten intolerant, that was my favorite vacation! I miss beer! (Gluten free isn't really gluten free.)
Thanks for sharing these memories.

@carolkean I have a book Mr Bean gave me and some Confederate money. We went to his place several times, he even came to Florida a few times, he was friends with my Dad. I can still remember what he looked like, he was a big man. And he wore a cowboy hat. Wow a descendant of Geronimo is cool. I have also met the great-grandson of Johnny Capone, he would camp at the inlet when I was young he was old short and had a big belly. lol

What a great cast of characters you have met!
Wow!
Confederate money. Cowboys. Characters of all shades (shady, shady).
No wonder you're such an awesome writer!

@carolkean you are so funny, I am just a fisherman, I do not know where the words I write come from but I do not think it is me and my memories.

I meant to say they are my memories, the words seem to write themselves I do not think about what to write so it is not me.

@myjob Very pleasant memories as a child with your father, especially the comment on the gift of friendship was great.

@felixgarciap thank you, he was so kind not to hurt a young girl's feelings. I wish I would have asked what the poly grip was for and picked something else.

Can you send me some poly grip too @myjob ? 🤣🤣🤣
