Keeping It Straight or Hot Water

My job was challenging; but I can now do it standing on my head.

That's because I've worked hard over the past few years to make it this way. Everything feels perfect.

It should be anyway, but that is also part of the problem. I am asking myself; am I too comfortable?

Stuck between the area of comfort but scared to move to the other side. I think if I do move, it'll be a push rather than a jump. I will be grateful for it.

For now, I will stay and see what happens. I don't want to do anything that I'll regret.

"It's definitely time for you to have a new job. There's one in the pipeline. Just a few small matters to attend to, then we'll be good to go."

This is not what I expected. An old friend from the past. A life that I had forgotten about.

That said, it was a delight to see my old friend.

"I hope this job doesn't relate to our old life, in any way," I said.

"We were good though, weren't we?"

"Yes, we were," I replied. "We were lucky not to end up in hot water. I'm glad we quit while we were ahead."

"What are you doing now?"

I described how things were, how I'd moved on. But I also talked about the possibility of being too comfortable.

"You need to move on, my friend. Do something new. Take a chance. I'm sure you'll be able to handle whatever comes to you. You were always headstrong."

"What about your new job?" I asked.

"As I said, it's time for you to look forward. Good luck to you "

It took time for the penny to drop. Then I realised; he never did move on.

"I wish you luck," I said.

We shook hands and looked at each other intently, before going our separate ways.
