5 Minute Freewrite: Wet carpet

in #freewrite6 years ago (edited)

Bill yawned, stretched and looked at the computer clock. It was 11:53 P.M. “No wonder I feel so sleepy. It’s the time to call it quits.” He walked out of his home office on the first floor of the house toward the stairs that lead to the bedrooms. The stairs as the entire second floor were carpeted, and before going up, Bill took off his shoes and walked up to the stairs barefoot. The carpet felt nice and soft on the way while he was going up the stairs, through the loft and to the bathroom, where he took a short shower. However, as he stepped into the bedroom and walked two steps toward the bed, he felt wetness under his feet.

“What the hell?!” Bill squatted and roamed around the floor with his hands. The wet spot was around six inches in diameter. He looked up the ceiling and noticed that directly above the spot there was a recessed light. He went down to the garage, brought with him a little ladder, got up on it, felt the rim of the lighting fixture with his fingers and made a short whistle of understanding. “It must be the rain” he grinned. Indeed the rain was pounding hard on the roof all day long. While he was working, he even enjoyed the sounds of its drumming, as is the view of streams of water falling down from the sky. Yet now… he was ironing his chin evaluating the situation.

Bill went down yet one more time, brought with him a large plastic wash basin and positioned it under the fixture above the wet spot on the carpet. “I’d have to take care of it tomorrow” he yawned and got under the blanket.

“I should call a roofer and tell him to fix this leak. Actually, he should check the entire roof. Maybe there are other leaks as well. Not sure how much it will cost but it would be nice to redo the entire roof. It’s already 22 years old and it’s about time to change it.” Then Bill remembered about the company that did special solar battery covering. “That would, of course, be more expensive, but with time it will justify itself as it will cover the entire electrical bill: air conditioning, lighting, I even can buy an electric car. What a saving on gas! That’s what the government should do instead of building walls around the country. The country should invest in solar panels for all the buildings and into the infrastructure for electric cars. Everybody should have electric cars! That would be so good for the environment!” As he was falling asleep, the word environment kept on running a constant neuron loop in his mind.

When he woke up, he looked at the wet spot on the carpet again. After he finished his exercises and ate breakfast, he called to the roofer company and invited a technician for a free estimate.

“It will be four thousand dollars to fix the leaks and twenty thousand to change the entire roof” was the roofer's estimate.

“Wow,” Bill thought, “Four grands, it’s kind of steep.”

$4K is a tad bit and $10k? Holy moly! 10K is what they estimated to paint my fiance's house to prep it for sale. Ugh!
