Cracker- Freewrite 103
Cracker -
Because just yesterday I was telling my daughter that it was a derogatory word. An insult directed at descendants of slave owners.
Cracker, like the “crack” sound their whips used to make.
But I’d rather talk about crackers. Nice graham crackers. Animal crackers. Cheese crackers.
Crackers with cheese. Crackers that go with cheese.
Crackers that used to be delicious but now taste like cardboard. Is it my taste buds that have changed? Or their recipe?
Wood pulp. What most “crackers” in the United States are made of nowadays. Our cereal too. Disguised as “cellulose fiber” to make us think that it’s good for us.
But it’s not.
Cracker. Such a simple word that brings so much disgust to me.
It’s easy to blame the world but when a children’s snack sets you off, you’ve become the problem.

I know!! When little things set us off, it is time to take a break - but, what is given to kids as food is a disgrace for the most part and so, it is good to be upset and do something about it.
Let's eat REAL food!!!
Such a heavy meaning for such a delicious taste. We all need "crack" from time to time... although is better to replace it with a good serving of cookies. Regards!
❤️❤️
Great work, especially the last sentence.....so philosophical!

Great freewrite! I love how you discussed both main references for ‘cracker’ and your ending was perfect for your context.
Thanks for noticing. I appreciate you being here.
Yum for wood pulp, and also, I had no idea it was about the crack of a whip. Huh.
Etymology of insults always brings varied results but yeah - that’s one version.
And, yeah, mmmm sweetened wood pulp - I’m not gonna pretend that we don’t eat that sometimes. My kids do love those fish.
Thanks for stopping by :)
Wow! I can hear that 'crack' that you so eloquently described- the crackers- how woeful! As for the taste of modern crackers;
a friend of mine from NYC exclaimed such surprise that our food in Ireland had so little ingredients. For example she told me that in Ireland the hummus she buys in the supermarket has about 6 ingredients but even from a healthstore in NYC she said the hummus could contain as many as 30 different ingredients. Maybe she was exaggerating? However, I hear you with the crackers problem! There is too much processing now- not enough taste or love in food production.
She was exaggerating but only a tiny little bit. Our food leaves a lot to be desired for.
But.
Our land and weather is easy to grow in so our “fresh” and “organic” food is very delicious 😋
