Rain (five minutes freewrite)

in #freewrite7 years ago (edited)

The first thing she came to hate about the town was the rain, the unrelenting endless drizzle. Or when it did stop it was only at night, when she was already in bed, trying to warm up after another cold and miserable rain.
Moving here had been a big mistake, she now realized. Back home, at least, they had spells of good weather, maybe a few days a month when you could go for a walk or have a coffee at a roadside cafe.
That was another thing she hated - this town had no nice places where a woman could have a cup of coffee and an ice-cream, maybe. The bar the people in her new office went every Friday was a mess - the coffee was undrinkable and the music so damn loud you couldn't hear your own thoughts, let alone have an interesting conversation.
As she lay in bed, the room drowning in the gloom that greeted her every morning, she cursed herself for taking this new job and signing a two-year contract. 'Such a great opportunity', they'd all said back home. Move to a big city, meet new people. In the three months, she'd been here she had hardly seen anything of the city. After getting home cold and wet five nights a week, the last thing she wanted to do on her weekends was going out again. Even the few errands she absolutely had to run were a drag in that stupid rain. Her joints ached, her back hurt - she was feeling at least 50, although she was only 34.

People at the office had noticed she was a bit under the weather - yeah, great joke! - and the boss insisted she sees a doctor. Company policy, he said.
She knew there was nothing wrong with her and, indeed, the doctor didn't find any problems with her legs or her spine. So, he sent her to another doctor, reassuring her there won't be any needles involved. She had a fear about needles, not exactly a phobia, but quite close. The second doctor shook his head and sent her to yet another doctor. Who didn't use needles, but poked and probed at her mind with endless questions, ticking boxes and putting question marks on the papers in front of him.
'Why don't we take a break and get a cup of coffee?' Quite suddenly, in the middle of conversation. She wasn't going to make it back to work, so why the hell not?
The hospital had a little coffee shop on the first floor and, to her horror, the doctor led the way to the terrace, waving a pack of cigarettes by way of explanation. 'Oh, great!', she thought and she followed him, feeling already cold.
The terrace overlooked a park and the doctor began to point out to her the children playing in the sand-box, the family having a picnic on the grass and the two lovers kissing under a tree, which gave them some sort of shelter from the sun. The bright lights hurt her eyes and she started to cry.
