Nothing left to say (Five minutes freewrite)

in #freewrite6 years ago (edited)

He opened his mouth, but nothing came out. She was still crying, curled on the bed, eyes swollen with dark circles around them from the smudged mascara. At least, she'd quietened down a little bit. She wasn't doing that frightening gasping for breath anymore and those soul-piercing howls. Now, she was just sobbing, every now and then casting a pitiful glance towards him. A small wounded animal, begging for mercy. A last minute reprieve. A stay of execution. Something.
There was nothing left to say. Not after a million 'I'm sorry'. Not after explaining why he had to go another million times. Not after holding her in his arms as she was trying to punch him. Not after pushing her away as she tried pulling him on top of her.
'That's not the solution, baby'. That has always been the solution every time something went wrong. Fuck all the problems away. Not this time.

He'd been thinking about it for months now and he'd tried to explain to her rationally, that it wasn't her, as cliche as that sounded.
'It's not you, it's me. I'm drowning here. I cannot stay here another day'.
No explanation whether here meant their home, the town, planet Earth.
He wanted to go back home, to his old apartment and his old friends. And his old way of life, especially that.
'Liar, you don't love my anymore, admit it'.
'Don't say that'.
He held her even tighter and kissed her on the forehead - a poor attempt to fool her, swapping tenderness for the love she desired.
He did not love her anymore, but that was something he couldn't tell her.
So he said nothing, picked up the suitcase and closed the door behind him.

Heart breaking. Thanks for sharing. I have to stop reading all the "nothing" posts before I go to sleep or I might have really depressing dreams...

Oh, he tried to let her down easy. Some people just can't process those words. Who wants someone who wants to leave?

Lol oh, the "insanity" of "love" (though that's not truly " love," in my opinion; just an insecure infatuation/ unhealthy attachment to someone if you're acting like that. imo lol)

I agree. To me, "wanna go, hey, peace out," works.

Totally agree. Wanna go? There's the door right there...

Credit to him for trying to be kind about it. I'm surprised that he stayed through the caterwauling! Most guys would have bolted. Better to let someone leave who wants out than to try to cajole them into staying. She probably would have just ended up constantly wondering when he would try to go again.
