Mango - Freewrite

When I think Mango, I am thinking of my friend Jim. He just passed away last month at the age of 85.
but did this man love Mangos!!! He was one of the founders of the California Rare Fruit growers and in the days before the internet and the easy access worldwide to just about anything the heart desires - including plants, he traveled the world to learn how to grow varieties and fruit that are not known in this part of the world.
Mangos are one of those fruits that are not native to Southern California at all. They are grown in Florida which has a much more tropical climate while we have more of a Mediterranean climate.
The Florida varieties are not doing so well here. But what a plant nut does is create their own varieties. Jim and another of the rare fruit growers, Manuel, set out to grow Mangoes you will love to eat.
Speaking of eating. He was known to show up at your house with a box of mangos of different varieties and to have you all sit down and do a tasting. Each fruit would be evaluated, compared, and of course, each seed carefully prepared and planted.
For best results, you want to get rid of the brown skin that covers the seed after you get it out of the shell. That is best done by soaking the seed in water for a bit and then peeling it off. If that step is skipped, the seed often rots instead of sprouting.
mango seeds, like all tropicals, are best planted right away. Once a seed has dried, it is unlikely that it will sprout.
Well, my 5 minutes are over. But let me tell you this little story.
When I first started with the rare fruit growers, I planted a full tray of Mango seeds - but put them all upside down. Now, every time I am getting ready to plant one, I confuse myself which way is up, which way is down and have to look it up.
Do you have those times when you know that you tend to get something wrong and then, can't remember which version is the correct one?

Come to the Philippines Marian..there's loads in here☺

I know!!!! My friend is from the Phillippines and her family has a Mango farm. She told me about eating mangos all day long :)

Fresh mango, mango float, mango smoothies, you name it😁 Even the house smells of mango, esp in the kitchen. This country is blessed!

I can't wait to visit!!

In Mexico we have such delicious mangoes, but I've never seen the inside of the pit like this and had no idea they looked like that!

This is also a really sweet memory of your friend Jim (no pun intended :)

Yes!! We get lots of Mangos from Mexico in the stores here. So delicious!!

They really are! And I've realized that so many fruits here are vine-ripened, so they taste like they're supposed to as opposed to ripening on a truck somewhere!
