Fingernails / Unghie delle mani - 5 Minute Freewrite Day 129 [Eng/Ita]

in #freewrite6 years ago (edited)

Oh Naglfar, ship made of nails of the dead,
Trucid invention born by the misty nights of mead fumes,
Of Norse skalds, who twist their tongues by competing in the most cryptic kenningars.
Naglfar, who will lead the souls of the dead to die again
Outside of Hel, in the Ragnarok, at the end of time.
Just the departure of Naglfar would have marked the beginning of the Ragnarok.
What sick fantasy must have a people, a culture, to invent a ship made of nails?
It is said that it was for this reason that the Norse cared a lot their fingernails and toenails.
They didn’t want death to catch them with their nails too long:
so they thought to slow down the construction work of the vile Naglfar as much as possible.
Perhaps the Norse moms had stronger, more colorful arguments than our modern moms, to make their children take care of their own hygiene.
Cut your nails, otherwise pirate zombies will come to cause the end of the world!
Effective!

Efficace!

WOW! I would clean my nails too!! :D

Lol! It's better!

Interesting story. I knew about the boat made of nails, but I didn't know it was connected to Ragnarok. Lucky for me I'm not Norse, as I like my fingernails long :))

Norse mythology is one of my favorites! But sometimes it's a bit nonsense ;)
How much long do you like your fingernails? I'm still scared by the long, red nails of one of my teachers, when I was a child. They were like those of a bird of prey...

What a grim legend! I've never heard it before, and very much enjoyed your poetic retelling, and commentary. "What sick fantasy must have a people, a culture, to invent a ship made of nails?"

Great writing. Perhaps a flagon of mead in celebration?

Perhaps! Or some sort of corruption of the language in oral transmission through the centuries. Beliefs over improper disposal of hair and nails in burial were very common in the ancient indo-european people.
