"Are you calling me stupid?"
"No, no, I am saying that was not smart."
Yes, I am calling you stupid. You idiot!!
“Not smart means stupid right?”
“No, not smart means not smart. And I didn’t say you are not smart, I am saying it’s that move that’s not smart.”
Yes, I am calling you stupid. Stupid is as stupid does.
“You know, there’s no winning with you.”
She turned around and continued packing the goody bags for the party. She was fuming. They had so much to do and he was in charge of that one thing. One thing. She was ready to explode. She looked up at him and tried to keep her voice as steady as possible.
*So, I just want to know. So you opened the box. There were no blades. And you didn’t think anything was wrong?”
“Well, you would think that buying it from iHome, everything would be intact right?”
“Yes, but sometimes these things happen. So when you saw the blades missing, you didn’t think to take it back? You go ahead and fix it?”
“Why would I think the blades were missing? I mean, it’s from iHome. You’d think ….."
She wasn’t listening anymore. She was ready to clobber him. Her eyes were twitching and her feet started tapping involuntarily. Something it did, when he just wouldn’t admit he messed up.
“Just not smart”, she muttered under her breath. Just one thing to do. Just one. Ahhhhhhhh
He got up to leave, took a peek at his handy work and was very pleased that he managed to fix it all by himself. All those years his father called him an idiot, an embarrassment to their family name. A family of builders and stonemasons, unable to do any sort of handiwork at home. But today, he proved them all wrong. He managed to fix the fan.
And that stupid woman…. Sorry, not smart woman, is going on and on.
He went to get the ladder. It was time to take it down and return it to iHome.

Love the reversal at the end - everyone called him stupid, even his dad, then his wife, but all along, he knew better. I want to smack those know-it-alls who are so condescending to him. ;)
This confused me: he proved them all wrong. He managed to fix the fan. But the wife keeps going on an on, so... He went to get the ladder. It was time to take it down and return it to iHome. But... he fixed it, no? If the thing came without blades, he must have fashioned his own blades? Sorry, I'm overthinking this. The main thing is the surprise twist. And I love the guy for not letting everyone get him down.

ok, he fixed it without the blades because he assumed it was the way it was
so he is taking it back to iHome to complain about the missing blades
but it is still a win for him cause he managed to fix it to the ceiling and that's something his family had been harping about since the first day he failed at tying his own shoelace.
Oh dear, I may be overthinking it too now hahaha
