The Big Freeze // A FreeWrite

As she sat all curled up, starring at the ceiling she wondered what it was like out there. She imagined people floating, almost like they were angels. Except with no wings. Kind and compassionate, always a compliment or a helping hand. A world where everybody knew what to say and what to do. It was a perfect world.

Somewhere in the back of her mind, she knew she was meeting her children today. They had something important to do in that beautiful place but it was just at the tip of her memory. She tried to remember what it was.

As vague as the thoughts of her kids were, vivid was the colours of the rainbow, the sound of waves, as the tide came in, birds chirping. The angel people smiling. This something with her children was just on the outskirts and she couldn't grasp the floating memory.

She sat there, going back and forth between the beautiful images, the important thing and the knowing that the guys in white should be arriving any minute. They always did. The only way she kept track of time. She counted her days by counting their visits. But sometimes she would lose track and then she would have to start all over again.

Her thoughts and feelings were blurring out, the edges seeping into each other. She looked at the window on the corner of the wall. Her heart started racing. She felt the anxiety but she wasn't sure why. She had to know why.

She walked up to the window, big steps, she didn't want to chicken out. She was going to look out the window. She had to know what was beyond. Maybe her children. Maybe the men in white were keeping them away.

She reached the window and stood on the tip of her toes to look out. It was all dark outside and she squinted her eyes even as something in her head kept telling her to step away. You don't want to know. She couldn't make out anything but there was a signboard in the far corner in Neon Lights.

It all came flooding back and she quickly stepped back ready to scream but she knew she shouldn't just in case.
