RE: Day 348 : 5 Minute Freewrite: Wednesday - Prompt: vinyl

in #freewrite6 years ago (edited)

Thanks @mariannewest!

"Grandpa, what is this?"

Sean fingered a thin, flat circular disc nicely encased in a translucent cover. It was black and had a donut-shaped hole in the middle, unlike anything he had ever seen before.

With a slightly cocked head, Sean continued to stare intently at the old bespectacled man who was lost for words.

"It's...it's vinyl, son."

"What's vinyl?" Sean perked up, his curiosity piqued.

Immediately a dark shadow fell upon his grandfather's face and his features hardened.

"It's just a useless piece of plastic."

The gruff tone startled Sean. But before he could ask any further, the old man hobbled out of the grimy basement in a huff.

Just at that very moment a small slip of paper floated like a light feather down onto the wooden planks. Bending down, Sean picked up the slip and unfolded it.

In perfect neat cursive were the words:
"YOU'LL NEVER MAKE MONEY AS A MUSICIAN."

LOL!
What do you call a musician without a girlfriend?
A: "Homeless"
But our son has roomed with up to 5 fellow musicians at a time, in Chicago. Stays out of debt. Works, gets gigs, pays his bills on time, and now is in NYC, enjoying the bachelor musician's life.
He left us with his huge collection of vinyls. Like, will he EVER have a real house to live in and room to store this stuff? Now his music collection is all in a computer chip. And vinyls are like Model T Fords.

Sounds a lot like my life as an actor. Hooray for being financially-careful artists!

But no, no one can afford a house ever again. Not in cities like NYC and LA, at least.

Too many people want to live in a great place, but not enough spaces to accommodate everyone have been built, and the roads are jammed with cars... it took us 2 hours to move 10 miles by car in Chicago last Friday. Ugh. I'm willing to live in a less desirable location because the good places become undesirable when too many people cluster there!

I hear that!

@improv what kind of acting do you do? 😊

We await your answer... or it somewhere in plain sight like at your profile, and I missed it.... http://www.brendanweinhold.com/ ... ooh comedy too? GERMANY? Off to click on links!

Oops, Los Angeles, not Germany (Weinhold is your name, not your location). Now Following @improv on Twitter!

Yay you discovered me!

We love these! Meaning me and the kids :) Family entertainment at its best--especially tying my wings down :)

All of it.

@carolkean ohhh wow! 👍

I'm so glad to see your son pursuing his dreams. I think it takes alot of courage, to choose such a path. (Otherwise all one has is regret, like Grandpa over here.)

Grandpa... you?
You may notice a theme in my freewrites: middle-aged women, usually grandmas, suddenly abandon the life they live to try something bold and unexpected. (Like burlesque, or a road trip to Sedona.)
Yes. Someday, I will do something crazy in real life, rather than just write about it!
Our son may not be in debt, but he's not saving money, either. He has no health insurance. He's not tied down to material things. Unconventional, free, and unconcerned! He's 28. Maybe by age 40 he'll settle down?

Love this piece. sigh

@wandrnrose7 aw thanks for your kind words! (:

Good stuff and reminds me of my record spinning days as a DJ.

I'm here with the Thursday prompt.
