Arthur Galbraith, Jr. was already a pillar of the community at the tender age of eighteen. Just graduated high school, and an Eagle Scout, nonetheless. It made his father Arthur Galbraith, Sr., also a bedrock pillar, very proud.
On this particular summer afternoon, his last summer before college, he stopped at Joe’s Diner.
“Hey, Artie,” Moira Stare almost sang in her sultry voice. It’s not that Moira knew Arthur particularly well, but everyone knows everyone in this small town. And that singing in a sultry voice is just how she talks to everyone.
Arthur looked up from the menu to see Moira with her tits on the other side of the counter.
“See anything you like, hon?” She adjusted those tits oh-so-slightly.
“How’s the blue plate special?”
“Burger ‘n fries,” she said. “Trust me, you’ll do better with the burger ‘n fries. The meatloaf, uh uh.” She pointed two fingers to her mouth and made a gagging sound.
“I remember you from middle school,” Arthur Galbraith, Jr. said. His sentence so open ended, even Moira Stare didn’t have a comeback.
“Yeah, and I forget you from middle school.” Okay, she did have a comeback. “You were so fuckin’ ordinary then as you are now. You look spiffy in that Eagle Scout uniform. Ain’t cha’ a little old for that stuff?”
“Just returned from a scout ceremony. Turning the baton to the younger generation.”
“Uh huh, gee. That’s A-fuckin’ fascinating.”
“I get it,” Arthur said. “Yeah, burger and fries, please. Well done.”
“Well done, huh, Artie? That’s right, play it safe. How ‘bout bloody rare? With a wedge of blue cheese? Sautéed habaneros on top.”
Arthur slammed his menu on the counter. He looked her in the eye. “Bloody rare, then! With a huge fucking wedge of blue and a gob of that habanero on top! And are you teasing me or hitting on me, Moira Stare?”
Moira nearly laughed in his face, “Oh sweetie, you couldn’t handle the likes of me. No way, no how.” She was sure to add a little jiggle to her walk as she sauntered to the kitchen.
Arthur didn’t take his eyes from her the whole way. ‘Damn tease,’ he muttered to himself. ‘If she had even a hint of what I could do for her, she’d be begging for it.’
When Moira came back out with his food, Arthur put his cards on the table, “Hey Moira, how about we make a deal?”
“What kind of deal?”
“Well, I’ll eat this special you challenged me with and then you come out to my truck with me for a minute.”
“Just a minute?” Moira quirked her brow.
“Well, let’s say you take your lunch break and I give you something worth having. Let’s say something at least as spicy as this burger?”
“Sweet cheeks, if you finish that burger without taking a drink of water, I’ll spend my entire break with you. I’ve always wanted to see the inside of that truck anyhow.” With a wink and a wave, Moira walked away.
Arthur ate that burger and didn’t take a drink. His mouth was on fire, his throat gasping and choking at the heat from the peppers she’d so liberally applied to his sandwich. His eyes watered and were probably red as a demons, but he didn’t back down. He’d been itching to get that saucy little piece alone since their school days.
He swallowed the last bite and saw Moira watching from around the corner. He smiled and crooked his finger at her. She blushed and slowly came back to him. “Well, well well Arthur, I really didn’t think a plain old boring guy like you would have what it takes to handle something that spicy and actually get the job done.”
“Oh honey, you have no idea.” Arthur stood to his feet. “Are you ready for your turn?” Moira took his hand and laughed a little nervously. They headed for the exit.
