Prompt:

"Don't you care about my well-being?" Sophia asked.

"Of course," Derril said with a grin. He stood in the grocery aisle butter pecan ice cream in one hand, his cell phone in the other. "My only question, sweetie, was how I should keep the ice cream frozen while I run across town for the french fries."

Sophia sniffed loudly into the phone. "I...I suppose it's not very practical is it?"

Derril tried to cover the laugh that was building in his chest. His wife of four years sat alone in their apartment, five months pregnant with more cravings than hours in the day.

"No, it's not..."

She let out another wimper.

"But it's fine! I will drop this off at home, and..."

"Derril?" Sophia asked, but the line had gone dead.

"Hello?" Derril asked, moving his phone so he could see his screen. Batteries dead.

"Ah well, I have more groceries to pick up," he tells himself, moving across the aisles to find his needed produce.

Derril moves towards the end of the store to where he checks out, monitoring his watch to see how much time had passed. She's probably worried sick. Thanking the cashier he leaves with two full paper bags. Pecan ice cream along with a couple more sweets was in one, and the produce he picked up in the other.

Exiting the store he quickly hurries to his car and drops his groceries in the back seat, fumbling his keys in the process. The engine starts and he accelerates towards home.

Upon opening the door he's greeted with a loud wail. "Derril, where have you been?!" his wife asks frantically, phone in hand and a damp tissue in the other.

He gives her a small, sincere smile and walks towards the kitchen to put away the heavy bags. "I'm really sorry for worrying you honey, my phone died and I rushed to get back," he explains, turning to her as the fridge shuts behind him. He walks up to her to give her a warm hug.

"I'll be back with your french fries alright honey? I'll also bring an extra phone charger just in case," Derril says, trying to reassure her.

Sophia pouts at him but the need for fries had grown in the time he was gone and so she complies. Moving towards her Derril kisses her on the cheek and heads back towards the garage. Once inside the car he plugs his phone into the charger. Almost immediately the phone starts to buzz with life and dozens of little dings pop from it. His phone was now covered in messages from his wife. Shaking his head with a smile he heads back out to get her fries.

What did we do back in the day without the mobile?
The need to always be connected is crazy!!
But crazier is your cravings so good thing he is bringing his phone charger with him, in case he needs to pick up more stuff :D

Agreed, I often wonder how they managed with only hand-written letters on paper. I feel that in this generation our patience has lessened and our need to be connected has skyrocketed. Perhaps someone could try to disconnect from their electronics for a week and only talk face-to-face or through a letter. It would be an interesting transition. x)

What a good husband...those fries are important! Thanks for finishing my story!

He seemed like a loving husband the way you described him, and thank you for giving the prompt for it!
