Day 22: 5 minute freewrite - "Itching" prompt

This very short piece is for the #freewrite project that @mariannewest is running. I love freewriting, and find it to be an excellent way to get your writing flowing. Here's my first five-minute freewrite piece for this intiative.

Itching

The dog was itching again. Damn. Carlyle and Fin were playing cards, and the sound of the dog was irritating. Betsy was in the kitchen making snacks and would be bringing them a fresh round of beers.

“Bets?” Carlyle would get her to remove the mutt. Maybe take him for a walk.

“Bets!”

“She can’t hear you,” Fin said. “She’s running the garbage disposal. Anyway, don’t you think it’s kind of rude to be calling to her like she’s your maid or something?”

“She’s not?” Carlyle had to laugh at that. He didn’t mean it, of course, and would only say such a thing out of earshot.

“Bets?” He turned to see if she was on her way, but unfortunately she was standing right next to him. She had heard the maid comment, and was not amused.

“Baby!” He said, grabbing her waist and pulling her to him. She pulled away. “God, you’re an amazing creature. Look at this lovely goddess, Fin! She’s freaking great, huh?”

Betsy set down her tray of snacks, and put a beer in front of each of them with a thunk. “Will there be anything else for his highness?”

Carlyle gave her his most sincere smile. “That dog,” he said. “Your dog. Could you give him a bath or something? He’s like got mange, or I don’t know what. He scratches, like, constantly.”

“Come on, Rufus,” she said. “We’re going to the park.”

As she left the house, Carlyle and Fin clinked beers. But he felt lonely, all of a sudden, with just him and Fin there, the TV sound down with the game on, and the air gone still without Betsy and the dog there, filling the house with their presence.
