FREEWRITE: RODEO
I will tell you the story of a little girl who lived for many years in the field. Her childhood was very unique. She was raised by her aunt Pio and her mother was their neighbor. Although she was present the girl did not understand why she had to live "She" with her aunt if they were 8 brothers and sisters at that time. Then she discovered why, but that's another story.
It turns out that this aunt was a single woman and in turn raised another nephew Beto, much older, Beto already was a man. They had a good status in society, because they owned cattle, pigs, goats, rabbits, ducks, turkeys, chickens, horses and crops of vegetables, fruits, corn, beans...
Beto (Humberto Lugo) & Pio (María Lugo)
Imagine yourself waking up with the cock singing, a cup of fresh milk and creole eggs on the table every morning.
The girl took care of those animals, all this involved hard work but she felt happy, that was a tremendous peace.
That girl became a friend of nature, many times her aunt instructed and explained when she had to take an animal for consumption or sale, because this caused much pain in that little girl.
Among all the animals there was one that she loved the most, this little calf was adopted too. She named him Juan, like a tremendous cousin she had, that was the personality of this new friend.
She always avoided that he was sacrificed, or sold. And if it was going to be sold that was not to be tortured in that sport.
Yes a sport similar to the rodeo, and they are called Toros coleados.
She did not like it, she did not understand how another living being could be treated like thatt She could not stop them from selling Juan, Beto sold everything, (he took them to bankruptcy, but again, that's another story), what she could do was not to support that sport and raise awareness about animal abuse, starting with his brothers and then at home when she had children, she taught them to love and respect nature, and was so successful that their children can not attend such events, not because were forbidden, but because their heart cries.
How do I know?
Because I am the oldest daughter of that little girl.

I'm pretty sure that soon you'll have a prompt that allows me to tell it hahaha
I love Juan the bull (and the cousin he's named for), love that little girl, and love her oldest daughter! Your "heart cries" at the sight of cruelty to animals. (Me too.)
You taught me something I didn't know. I had to look up Toros coleados. "The coleo is an abusive sport, which stands out for its cruelty and lack of sensitivity to the pain of others. Unlike a bullfight, where the blood that spouts from the animal is visible, the calf that is kicked presents internal spills, nothing perceived by the spectators, for what many think is a bloodless sport. The wounds of animals such as bruises of internal organs, hemorrhages, broken bones, tendons, muscles and torn ligaments, are expected and anticipated in this violent tradition. The promoters of the coleo consider that these animals are cheap, disposable, and replaceable, and that is why they are used again and again (in smaller sleeves) until their battered and bruised bodies end up in the slaughterhouse."
There is more, but I will spare @freewrite fans from further details. https://www.animanaturalis.org/p/1345/no-al-coleo
Hello dear friend @carolkean ... yes it is very sad that they are considered disposable, as you mention it based on your research.
Likewise, it is a pleasure to know that we have something more in common and thank you for passing and commenting.
