Joshuan lived in a remote treetop village. For many many many miles around, there was only his fellow villagers and himself. One of these other villagers was named Gretchuan. She went hiking every day to the top of an even remoter mountain. She was a very fast hiker. One day, Joshuan tried going with her. He fell behind almost immediately, though, and got lost. The sun overhead was so remote that he couldn't even feel its warmth. He climbed to the top of a tree to get closer to it. He did get closer to it, but not close enough to make a difference. His limbs got stiff as he clung to that treetop. He thought all was lost. He spent the whole day up there until eventually he spied Gretchuan coming back. Her path wasn't going to take her near where he had gotten himself lost. He thought all was lost yet again.

He was right. Sometimes when you think all is lost, you're right. In books, often that phrase means that the character thinks a thing, but something different happens. In this case, though, all was indeed lost. He died up there. And there was an end to it.
