Did you know?
When you receive WIC, Women, Infant, and Children, checks to buy food, they don't come in amounts of money, but rather in amounts of food.
And did you further know that they give you 4 and a half gallons of milk per month?
Maybe this isn't a lot for some people, but it's about twice as much as we would usually drink.
It's so much milk.
We've used it to make yogurt at home. But we also get yogurt from WIC.
Other funny things about WIC: I think they aren't used to ... well, something, because... maybe that their clients are seeing a pediatrician as often as they're supposed to? Because they are very pro-active about getting weight checks for the kiddo, even though the pediatrician also does that. And the weight checks are fine, though the WIC folks seem to be trying really hard not to be concerned about his weight, even though the pediatrician assures us he's doing just right. People are funny, and a little knowledge is such a dangerous thing. Not that they have only a little knowledge, but they have less than the pediatrician. TO clarify, our kiddo is long and lean, so he's got a fairly low BMI... like in the bottom 5%, but according to the pediatrician that doesn't mean anything is wrong, just ... I mean, look at him. He's super active, so he's burning calories like crazy, and he's attentive and alert, so it's not like there's anything to suggest he's not getting enough nutrition or calories... He just gets them and uses them.

Whole milk is great stuff! Life Cereal as well.
Truth! But wouldn't you know it, they only allow 1% or skim milk. Absurd.
That is foolish. Fat is good for brain development and whole milk provides that.
Oh, we know. I think the guidelines are from way back when during the "fat is bad" craze.
Our local grocery store gives away a free gallon of milk on certain days of the week if you purchase more than $20 worth of other items. The last free jug that I received was when I was at home alone for the week, no way I was using a whole gallon in that time, so I hesitated about taking it. But then a thought hit me and I let them bag it up for me. Right next door to the grocer is a workout center packed with younger to middle-aged adults, I just hollered to a group of them in the parking lot and asked; "Who has kids?" The first hand to go up got the milk 🙂
Nice. It also freezes ok.... our problem is ... an infinite supply of milk won't fit in our freezer.
WIC has such outdated ideas about nutrition and so many other things. But they are trying and it is better than nothing.
You could make some cheese with your milk... but you get cheese from Wic as well. Bake little pumpkins filled with milk while baking. Makes a yummy soup type of a meal. Puddings take milk. White sauces LOL
So many white sauces, but @stinawog prefers marinara. We get through it somehow, but we drink more than we want to, lol.
maybe you can trade with a neighbor or friend - milk for oranges or something...
We also get lots of oranges. I'd trade them for some spices, though! We don't get those with WIC.
Ahhh... I remember the joys of dealing with WIC. The supplemental food was much needed, but the guilt trips I got from the people at times became so stressful!

It's been 20 years ago (plus some) for me, but I still remember the experience! No shame in it at all. We all do what we need to for our kids!
