The hike had taken only an hour, but Candace felt entirely worn out. She also felt like she had finally escaped all her worry. Melting snow still rested on branches. Little droplets refracting the green of the pine needles around them.

This was a place for magical silence. There was no air traffic, not even a chattering group of school children. This was a lonely place. If she died here, no one would find her body, perhaps ever. She let her mind rest on morbid thoughts. No one would know what she was thinking, so why censor it? Let it be. Let it all be. She breathed in and believed in unicorns.
