His face was golden in the midnight sun. Alaska's summer days were hotter than he'd expected Alaska to ever be, but the mosquitoes were just as bad as he'd expected them to be. The first time he spent a weekend away, he went to Hawaii, but this time, Juan had convinced him to go to Alaska. "It'll be fun," Juan had said, "We'll pretend we're prospectors from the old days and pan for gold in a creek. Maybe we'll even see Polar Bears."
"I don't think they have polar bears, Juan," Georg had said, but he'd capitulated, and here they were and Juan was beautiful in the golden midnight sun.
They'd decided to stay awake the whole night long. A night with only sunlight. It was as special as they'd hoped it could be. Their bodies didn't even know enough to be tired, and the ocean was as oceanic as they could expect it to be.
Then a small buzzing began. It buzzed until they thwacked. And then it buzzed again. It was as if the stroke of midnight had brought out mini-vampires. Vampires. These mosquitoes were surely vampires because they were not ordinary mosquitoes. They were huge, like horse flies, and they seemed resilient. They could take a smack and come back. They did take smack after smack after smack.
It sometimes seems that there is a price to be paid for every pleasure.
