APRICOT

When I was a child, I thought my favorite fruit was apricots. I suppose it was, since nothing makes something your favorite except thinking it is. So it was. But then time passed, and I didn't eat any apricots, and when I did again eventually, I couldn't remember why they had been my favorite... Dried apricots were still moderately special. And I still love the color... and the fruit is... fine, I guess, but nothing to write home about... Sometimes, tooo often, they're overripe or underripe. Too tart or too slimy or too... something..

In the years since we moved to Los Angeles, though, I've begun to wonder if that fruit I ate and thought was my favorite, was actually a loquat. I can imagine even my parents thinking it's an apricot, if they weren't familiar with the difference... loquats remain my favorite for a variety of reasons. Not least of which. Urban scavenging. They're everywhere on trees when they're in season. I can fill my pockets and cheeks with loquats on a stroll with the pup. I can fine them rolling on the ground. I can sneakily pick them from overhanging branches (it's legal, I swear!).
Second of all, each one has a unique flavor. Some are like candy. some are like fruit, but they all have a very satisfyingly smooth round bunch of seeds that you can suck the flesh from and pop out of your mouth like a marble.
