Bite size fortune (freewrite)

in #freewrite7 years ago

They met at the flea market, while he was shopping for a bag and she...well, she didn't exactly know what she was shopping for. But she knew, when she saw him, that it didn't really matter. There was something strange about him and she understood that it had guided her steps here.
She stared at him over isles of stuff, mounds of old camisoles and dusty stuffed toys.
He looked up and waved, but she did not. She knew the truth, when she looked at him, and it wasn't pretty.
The witch realized she couldn't tell him. He seemed like such a nice guy, she's hate herself forever if she told him now. True, the other witches would probably hate her when she told them – she hadn't been able to face one pitiful mortal. How would she be able to...well, to do anything? She couldn't be a very good witch with this attitude.

But she just couldn't. She saw, in this young man's future, great turmoil and sadness. He would look for a love and he wouldn't find her. And when he did find her, he would only want more. He'd never be happy. He was just that sort of guy, she supposed, but why should she be the one to tell him?
Just because she had the gift? Was she responsible for this man's future simply because she could see into it? Of course not, that was absurd.
He was walking around the aisles, making his way around the towers of second-hand books and coming towards her.
Think fast.
To her left, she glanced a couple of wayward brooms, hanging in a corner and she willed them, with her mind's eye to tumble down, which they did. The doomed man turned around to look at the commotion and she disappeared, leaving behind only one singular flea.
It wasn't that she had fleas. No, how could you ever think that? She was a witch, not a stray cat. Give her some credit.
Williams was her familiar. She'd chosen a flea 'cause he'd be hard to spot, as was the case now. The man walked to the spot where she'd been, in vain. Or so he thought. Williams jumped on his arm, burying himself in his black hair and guided him, through the streets, towards the nearest bar, where a beautiful woman stood alone and lonely, waiting for a prince that had stood her up.
The man, of course, sat down at the bar and downed his shots, but Williams wasn't one to quit easy, so he bit and scratched until the man moved over enough to notice the woman.
Williams vanished from the man's arm as quietly as he'd come.

They got married in less than two months and in another life, they would've been a perfect match. But the man couldn't take his mind off the strange woman at the flea market and he'd dream of her for years to come.

Prompt word was 'flea'. If you'd like to join the freewriting madness (and awesome family), check out @mariannewest!

The last paragraph held me grip, it sums it all, you're a great writer.

That's one of the nicest compliments I've ever received. Thank you so much! This was a bit different from my regular style, so it sure was an interesting journey! ;)

Williams is such a matchmaker, the witch and the familiar animal plot reminds me of the series movie salem. nice story with a solemn ending, although at least they got married in another life.

I've heard of the movie, but I don't think I've ever seen it...Thank you. I've always been into witches and as soon as I saw the prompt, that's what came to my head :)

Neat story. The man changing into a flea was a nice touch.

But the man didn't change into a flea...:D

My bad. Read it wrong. 🤗

the poor guy - of course he couldn't forget her. What came first.... Was he already doomed or did it only happen after he saw her...

I don't know :O That is exactly what I was wondering, when I finished the story! I'd like to think it was because he saw her, that otherwise, he would've been fine. It just seems more poetic that way, but who knows?
Thank you, Marianne! I'm really loving these freewrites!

Thank you for writing with us!!! Yours are always a pleasure to read!
And I am with you. He would have been fine if he wouldn't have seen her.....

You're the first person I've ever known to use a flea as a familiar! Clever! 😎 I enjoyed reading this and am wondering what would have happened if the witch had waved back and talked with him.

Ha, thank you @brisby. At first, I only thought of 'flea market', but then while I was writing, it kinda dawned on me ;)
Yes, I wonder what would've happened too...I guess in another universe, things were very different. Or maybe not...

Thank you for being a freewrite encourager!!

Thank you for having me! It's a lovely job ;)

It's hard not to vote these, it's like a tic.
