Voices of the night.

The patient from bed # 6 had become their weather forecaster. They had learned to read his reactions and associate them with atmospheric changes. María was a veteran nurse and throughout her career she had worked in almost every department. Her time in the psychiatric wing had been a pleasant one thus far, considering, the creepy stories of violent and nasty patients.

-Rain is coming.
-How do you know? The new nurse asked.
-Look at his eyes, his awry smile.
-How did he become this?
-Nobody knows. They say he answered a midnight call. One of those malign voices that sound like anyone in the house. Sometimes, they sound like loved ones that are gone, but who we miss so much that we forget they are no longer with us, and so we answer desperately, What is it? I’m coming! It is like giving permission, opening a door not knowing who is getting in.

-It started to rain.
-You see?
A pair of perplexed eyes and a frozen awry smile, that was mistakenly read as fulfilling, hid an internal struggle that was tearing the patient of bed 6 apart. He could not wake up, let loose, or scream, and his inanimate body remained imprisoned between the absurd outer speculations and the inner mockery of the voices that day and night now rejoiced in their triumph.

They were there to stay and spread their dominions, like a wild river after a strong rain, just like the one these two nurses were contemplating ecstatically from the window of the 9th floor. Every one of them caressed a cold hand of a prisoner that cursed having answered to that urging voice that called him that night.

Truly, this is well done! Brilliant passages like this leap out at me:
-How did he become this?
-Nobody knows. They say he answered a midnight call. One of those malign voices that sound like anyone in the house. Sometimes, they sound like loved ones that are gone, but who we miss so much that we forget they are no longer with us, and so we answer desperately, What is it? I’m coming! It is like giving permission, opening a door not knowing who is getting in.

#Love it!

Thanks for your encouraging words. I am thankful to the #freewritehouse team for the motivation. I regret my daily routine prevents me from participating more actively. Today, for instace, like yesterday, hours wasted running errands and legal paperwork (no car, phone and internet failing, power failures, you name it. paperwork was never so complicated)

Ohhh I feel your pain!
And I'm challenged by slow internet and no tech skills, like, the husband finally got me to add a password to my cellphone and a thumbprint to keep from me from pocket dialing and accidentally accepting spam calls from the Netherlands.
I want you to have more time to write, and more peace of mind or space to do it - life gets in the way with those errands and the techno ups and downs. Power failures! Financial crises! I want to fix Venezuala. I want to fix the world...

Are you listening, super-powers-grantors, super-fortune-makers? She deserves millions of dollars so that she can put them to good use!
I know it sounds as a cliche, but there are so many people around the world still taking everything for granted, wasting time and money in crap, in things they already have, or in things they don't even need or use, and only a fraction of that wasted money could make big differences in many lives in many places.
100 bucks a month would make many people jump here and there are spouses suing because they can't do much with 25k a month!
Anyway, I guess it is in these hardships that we can find a voice to say and write about what others do not see. I just hope to have some health long enough to see this change.

LOL! If I had millions, I'd be giving them away so fast, I'd be depleted all too soon.
How does one decide how much help to give someone, and how much "tough love"?
I want to be like a genie in a bottle, granting wishes (but only the wise wishes, not the dangerous ones!), and I don't want to be trapped in a bottle -- I don't even want to be buried in a coffin, but cremated and planted with a tree--so, yeah. For now I just wish you had more time and better working conditions because we all want MORE MORE MORE of your writing!

Compelling and real for some.

Hi, @justjoy. It can be very real indeed.
Thanks for stopping by

I live daily under the effect of atmospheric change, my children should read this story to keep in mind that I am not the only one. LOL
By the way congratulations on your nomination at @adsactly
Much deserved.

Thank you very much :)

Absolutely. Life provides all the stories. Writers may make them look as out of this world, but every writers has a storage of personal or family stories enough to fill volumes. And if you listen carefully, you'll get plenty of free stories from friends and strangers who tell them every day in the streets.
