It was my turn, again, to work as the bodyguard of another wannabe aristocrat, one of those previously common people who suddenly got rich and since they didn’t have the education and grace of the nobleblooded, they tried to save face by being more exuberant in their expenses. They threw coin here and there, buying more luxury items far quicker than they will ever use.

Today, they hired me as additional muscle, because for being a still healthy and young woman they saw me as a “nicer to look at” presence than their usual employees, but still strong enough to keep them safe against any threat that they lives could suffer in the dark corner of the already black market we were getting into. Their vices and need to overcompensate had called them to the illegal, and in the few hours that I’ve been alongside them, I could feel them being as nasty as any lawbreaker that walked around, and then some more.

Our guide, a tiny man wrapped in dirty clothes and with only 2 teeth left in his mouth, carried us trough narrow passage after narrow passage until reaching a building with all opening blocked except for a back door. Once inside we went through a hidden trapdoor that opened to reveal a foul smell, like sweat, blood and excrement that were not completely washed away, and beyond that, chained against the wall and dressed in a poor attempt at appearing clean, dozens of individuals from various races and ages, their beaten faces a mix of hunger and fear. The small and dirty man smiled proudly while saying:

Everything is on sale, I hope you find something to your liking Signore…
