Freewrite - Hair
I had such beautiful hair as a child. It was golden and curly, and drew attention wherever I went. The curly hair genes came from my mother's side. My Mum, grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins in Wales all had blonde tight curly hair, and those still with us have tight blonde curls. But because my Dad's side all had poker straight black hair, the mixed genes caused my hair to be pleasantly curly, golden, soft and flattering.
I loved my hair and the attention it gave me. But when I was approaching twelve years old I realized that all my friends had dead straight hair, and I wanted to be like them. So, for my twelfth birthday, one of my Scottish aunts (with poker straight short hair of course) surprised me with a trip to the hairdresser's as a gift. I will never forget the disappointment on Mum's face when she saw that my beautiful long curly locks were gone. I got what I wanted! For a while at least, I looked like everyone else!

This photograph is one of a set of polyphotos (a sheet of about 40 different photos printed as a contact sheet) that were taken when I was 2 years old. On a train trip to Wales from Scotland not long after the photos were taken, a man on the train was so enamored by my curls, that he asked Mum for a photograph of me. I don't think that parents today would be so trusting of a stranger on a train! I wonder if somewhere out there someone still has that photo and wonders why it is in their family photo album!

I also have curly hair and I straighten them as well some times. We are never just satisfied with what we got. My son's both got curly hair and they love it and I am glad about that. I think I must just embrace my curls and be diffrent! :-)
It's funny how we want to be different from what we are. My sister and my niece use a hair straightener to get rid of their curls. I love it now! I just wash my hair and let it dry. My curls are still very soft, so it works well.

Thanks! yes, freewwrite is weird. It's wherever your mind takes you for 5 minutes, so instead of some fiction story, I thought about my own hair! LOL! I will check out yours!

So cute, I have a photo of mat at about the same age somewhere here, when I first saw it about 10 Years ago when my Sister gave it to me at first I thought I was looking at a beach a ball with Curly hair LOL
Aw. My hair looks curlier in other photos, but my Mom had combed a wave at the front for this portrait session. LOL!

At least you didn't have to wear a bow bigger than your head, I hope. LOL! That came later when my hair was longer and it was very fashionable at the time.

What an adorable photo! I agree with you, I can't think of anyone who would just hand over a photo of their child. Then again, I suppose with social media nowadays, that's sort of the same thing.

This was such an adorable freewrite. As I have written several times on Marianne's posts, I love freewrites and posts that give a sneak peek into someone's life so this one has to be one of my favorites. I love this picture of you. You are adorable and yes, your locks are lovely too; remind me of Goldilocks. My sister has curly hair and had locks similar to yours when she was a baby so we named her Goldilocks. A lot of people with curls wish for straight hair and many with straight hair go to parlors to get their hair curled and permed- this is what I have seen happen a lot here. Yes, a little change from time to time is good but we should be happy with what we have, but sadly we aren't told that when we are kids. I was very happy with my hair as a kid, but wasn't too happy with my complexion since everyone made sure to tell me that a slightly tanned complexion is not nice.
Isn't it crazy how we want the opposite of what we have!! And yes, today, a stranger asking for a picture of you child - jail!!! Great picture of you. So glad that you found it!!!
