Power Up
Turbine City. Yeah, that's what the sign post said. I needed gas and I saw a gas station there so I turned off. Everything here looked frozen. The young kid ran from the gas station and asked what I wanted. I told him and to my amazement he began to pump my gas. I ran into the convenience store that was attached. I needed: 5 hour energy; Ding Dongs; chips and other assorted energy supplies. And an apple, I had a long way to go.
There was a sign behind the counter :"Turbine City, Wyoming: We are the people with Power!" I asked the Old woman behind the counter what the sign meant.
She said that twenty years ago, the Turbo Turbine Company had sent a bunch of turbines to Rock Springs, a couple of hours up the freeway. In the freezing blizzard, the driver turned off the freeway at the wrong exit, had gotten lost and ended up in this small valley. The truck got stuck, the snow covered it and it was as good as gone. The company figured it was stolen and wrote it off. When the snow thawed, old Barney found it, called his son, who worked at Boeing, who came in and hooked them up. The son got a deal on some old propeller blades, hooked them to the turbines and we all have power."
I was impressed. " So how many people live here?"
"Shit, just me and young Henry out side. It's too god-damned cold and miserable to live here all the time."
"But, all the power, you could live in a mansion and be very warm," I said.
"Oh honey," she said with kindness, " We do live in a mansion. In the city. We sell all our power to Salt Lake and Denver and each of our family just takes a turn once a year living here for a few weeks to maintain everything."
This is great. I never knew that when Lou Reed talked about "sucking on a Ding Dong", he meant some kind of cream-filled cake.
He was deep, man, many-layered contexts...:-)
Thanks for reading.
Nice story, I enjoyed it!
Thanks. It would be a strange place to drop in on.
Very funny story, I liked the old woman talk. :)

She 's meant to be a person just dropped into wealth...and pleased about it. Thanks.
Nice story! I haven't heard "Ding Dongs" mentioned in a long time 👍
