Nests

Bird nests are very diverse. Dove nests look like someone took a hand full of twigs and dropped them on a branch. But hummingbird nests are little works of functional art. We had a small front yard with a lawn and two small scraggly looking pine trees. Several hummingbirds tried to put nests in them, but between mowing the lawn under their nests and people walking under them, they'd give up and leave before the chicks would hatch. Finally, we had a mom who sat on her nest even thru all the chaos underneath her. The chicks hatched and she continued to keep them warm. An unexpected cold snap came thru the area and the chicks died. Martha - that was her name - Immediately built another nest in the same tree. This nest was lower, we could hit our heads on it, but it was better protected and actually harder to find. Martha's nest looked like a small bump of limb on the pine tree limb. This nest worked perfectly. We were able to see her chicks grow and eventually take off on their own.
Yeah, even hummingbirds have enough sense to adapt and change to survive their climate change.
