Mind Yourself, a 5 minute freewrite

in #freewrite7 years ago (edited)

When it comes to health I am the luckiest person alive. I’m never ill. No aches, no pains, no maladies. I’m fit as a flea. I don’t get colds, flu, stomach upsets or any of the ailments people around me seem to suffer. Every day I feel in tip-top condition. I cannot imagine what it's like to be sick or in pain so I do try to make my body a comfortable place to inhabit by eating from nature and not from packets, not stuffing myself with garbage and exercising regularly. You only get one body after all.

Sick was a four-letter word in our household growing up. Unless you were covered from head to toe in large red spots, you went to school. Any attempt at feigning a malady would be met with my father’s favourite quote from the James Cagney movie One Two Three…. 'Sick or not sick, everyone works today.' He believed it was a case of mind over matter and he had a lifelong suspicion of doctors and pills. We were all born at home and he gave no consent for vaccination or anything of that ilk.

I’m not sure if this early proscription against illness has anything to do with my strong constitution or if, when it came to bodies, I just hit the jackpot, but I do suspect that the mind has much to do with the health of the body and it is possible for us to think ourselves sick.

That's brill. I love your dad's mindset and suspicion of the medical profession. Yes, natural food is the best tonic a body can have.

cheers

Yes indeed, it guess it wasn't a bad inheritance at all, considering I could have inherited his craziness instead;)

Done and done! Just make sure you have a good supply of adult diapers.

Happy days @deirdyweirdy I would say it is a mix of genetics and the way you protect your temple :o) Seriously though making things from scratch and avoiding packets as you say is off huge benefit... This instant society will be the death of us, literally :o)

We have little control over the water we drink or air we breathe, but I find some comfort in knowing the people who grow what I put into my mouth. There is very little connection now between the producers and consumers and most have no idea where their food comes from or how it gets from the field to the package. I'm a great believer in the old 'you are what you eat' maxim. We're all journeying towards death but why not do your best to make that journey as comfortable and pain free as possible.

Very interesting way of looking at things. In our house, we have become very good at making food from scratch where possible, but the majority of food is still supermarket bought... Your idea of buying from smaller organic producers sounds like a great idea, but I guess it works out quite expensive... But as you say we are what we eat, so there is a price to pay..

Is it a myth that organic food is expensive? I literally never darken the door of a supermarket so I have no idea what the stuff they sell there costs, but I feed 2 people a hearty breakfast and supper 7 days a week, plus a litre of juice and smoothie for three people 6 days a week and it cost me anything between 150 and 200 euro per week depending on the season.
Is that expensive compared to what you would spend?

I suppose it depends on where you live.. I'm in Ashbourne, and if I went fully free range and organic, it would cost me, I estimate 20-40% extra... That is a guess now, but it is definitely more expensive here.. You have certainly made me think though, and I think to be honest, the extra spend is worth it.. and just as I am writing I have thought about Newbarn Farm which is very close to us and has lots of fruit and veg they grow themselves which we sometimes get... I guess it is the convenience of getting everything in one place that we fall for, but maybe it is worth it to go to a few places, and by doing so support smaller local businesses and improve our health as well..

I live in the centre of Dublin and we're lucky enough to have McNally Farms selling in Temple Bar every Saturday, only 20 minutes from me. Their farm is only 30km away so you can't get much fresher than that.
I must say it seems to get busier every week but what I do notice is that most customers are foreign. The Irish seem reluctant to pay for quality food when they can buy what passes for food in Lidl.
Little wonder we are becoming increasingly sick and overweight.

I'm really glad we had this little comment chat @deirdyweirdy I must try and make it over to Newbarn Farm more often... They do fresh eggs and lots of veg that they grow on site, and most of the meat in their little restaurant is there own.. If you're ever out Ashbourne way, check them out. It's called Newbarn farm or The Donkey Shed..

I've never heard of being 'fit as a flea' :)
I agree with you - some people can think themselves sick!

Interesting. What do you say then....fit as a ?
We also say fit as fiddle and fit as a butcher's dog. Do you use one of them perhaps?

I agree, telling yourself you are going to get sick, or that you are sick actually makes you sick. I also noticed my son and I not getting sick as often, after changing what we eat. One habit I can't kick is buying boxed foods. When fundings are limited for food items, you do what you can. Except for headaches, which most are stress induced, I tend to deal more with allergies. Thanks for the refreshing thinking mode of what we do to our body. :-)

I'm lucky to live close to a farmer's market selling reasonably priced produce grown just 30km away. I also do a lot of sprouting which is a very cost effective way to get your vitamins and minerals. Even small changes to the diet can yield great benefits.
As for packaged foods, in many cases you get just about the same nutrition from eating the box as the contents.
Cheers for the visit.

Lol, I bet we do. I try to avoid things with msg in them too, even though many boxed foods have it. The stuff kills my stomach. I stick with BarilIa brand.
I will be attempting to make my own planter for my patio, and hope to start growing greens and such. A client is getting me the instructions for the one he made.
Our farmers market is fairly close, but would love to get out to the famous PikePlace Market. The road constructions don't make the travel worth the headache.

Are you vegan?
Maybe, raw vegan?

Some years ago, I strictly followed a raw vegan High Carb Low Fat natural diet, finished two marathons and never felt better than that period, you know?

I don't like to use the V word as it seems to bring many people out in a rash, but yes, I eat mostly raw and don't regard other sentient creatures as food...... but keep it under your hat won't you.

I understand and agree with you: most of the time, labeling is a way to divide us and we can avoid to do it without any doubt. ;)

What a blessing. When the car accident brought migraines, my world changed. I was always active and seldom ill. Now I appreciate all the good days.

I'm sorry to hear that. I really do appreciate how lucky I am and I guess we can never know what could be around the next corner.
Thanks for the comment.
