RE: Mind Yourself, a 5 minute freewrite

Happy days @deirdyweirdy I would say it is a mix of genetics and the way you protect your temple :o) Seriously though making things from scratch and avoiding packets as you say is off huge benefit... This instant society will be the death of us, literally :o)

We have little control over the water we drink or air we breathe, but I find some comfort in knowing the people who grow what I put into my mouth. There is very little connection now between the producers and consumers and most have no idea where their food comes from or how it gets from the field to the package. I'm a great believer in the old 'you are what you eat' maxim. We're all journeying towards death but why not do your best to make that journey as comfortable and pain free as possible.

Very interesting way of looking at things. In our house, we have become very good at making food from scratch where possible, but the majority of food is still supermarket bought... Your idea of buying from smaller organic producers sounds like a great idea, but I guess it works out quite expensive... But as you say we are what we eat, so there is a price to pay..

Is it a myth that organic food is expensive? I literally never darken the door of a supermarket so I have no idea what the stuff they sell there costs, but I feed 2 people a hearty breakfast and supper 7 days a week, plus a litre of juice and smoothie for three people 6 days a week and it cost me anything between 150 and 200 euro per week depending on the season.
Is that expensive compared to what you would spend?

I suppose it depends on where you live.. I'm in Ashbourne, and if I went fully free range and organic, it would cost me, I estimate 20-40% extra... That is a guess now, but it is definitely more expensive here.. You have certainly made me think though, and I think to be honest, the extra spend is worth it.. and just as I am writing I have thought about Newbarn Farm which is very close to us and has lots of fruit and veg they grow themselves which we sometimes get... I guess it is the convenience of getting everything in one place that we fall for, but maybe it is worth it to go to a few places, and by doing so support smaller local businesses and improve our health as well..

I live in the centre of Dublin and we're lucky enough to have McNally Farms selling in Temple Bar every Saturday, only 20 minutes from me. Their farm is only 30km away so you can't get much fresher than that.
I must say it seems to get busier every week but what I do notice is that most customers are foreign. The Irish seem reluctant to pay for quality food when they can buy what passes for food in Lidl.
Little wonder we are becoming increasingly sick and overweight.

I'm really glad we had this little comment chat @deirdyweirdy I must try and make it over to Newbarn Farm more often... They do fresh eggs and lots of veg that they grow on site, and most of the meat in their little restaurant is there own.. If you're ever out Ashbourne way, check them out. It's called Newbarn farm or The Donkey Shed..
