The Weekend Freewrite 12/30/2017- Part 3

Part 3: Final Chapter "the bill she forgot to pay"

Melany was once again rushing to her Mom's house on her lunch hour, another emergency to take care of! Last week it was about her cat Charlotte that had gone out the door when she was going to the mailbox and had not returned. Today it was something about the bill she forgot to pay on Monday and now they were cutting off her water. It was not enough that she was having to work late into the night at the Law Firm, oh how she wanted and needed that partnership. And it wasn't enough that her husband fairly refused to help with the kids even though he had a nine to five job and spent all of his free time burning their income playing golf with his friends, and losing bets! But she was also trying to take care of her Mother without any support from the rest of the family. Michael had been living at home and taking care of things until about five years ago, and then he simply vanished and no one had seen him since. Sometimes she thought that he was right, she was living like a fish in an aquarium just swimming around and around in circles and never getting anywhere. She had never understood Michael and they had never been close, but she sure did appreciate him a lot more since he disappeared.

Melany had thought back to their short conversations in the past and tried to remember some of his rants to get some idea where he might have gone off to. He had spoken of the apocalypse, biological weapons and the threat of nuclear war. She remembered the time when he was sure that the "grid" was going to go down, and who could forget the disaster of 2000 when all of the computers were supposed to crash that never happened. She was sure that it had something to do with all the talk about North Korea and nuclear war that was on all the news channels just before he disappeared, but where would he have gone to?

It was no use worrying about it, but if she found out that he had been sitting on the beach of some remote Island drinking Mai Tai's this whole time she was going to kill him before someone did drop a bomb on our heads. Looking at Michael's Senior Portrait next to hers in her Mom's hallway Melany whispered under her breath, if you are still alive big brother you better get your butt back home soon or I'm going to give your room to someone who will take care of Mom instead of paying rent. She snickered when she thought about how mad he would be if she tossed all of those stupid baseball cards that she had never been allowed to touch when they were both kids living at home, come to think of it she might just do that anyway for all of the misery he had caused her with this crazy disappearing act of his. But then she thought of how bad she would feel if it did turn out that he had died in some freak accident and the body was never found or could not be identified. So she paid the bill and kissed Mom on the forehead, now back to the fish tank!
