Day 113: 5 Minute Freewrite: Friday - Prompt: ski

Rob Cummings stood just a few feet above the precipice looking off into the distance. fifteen minutes had passed since the helicopter had dropped him off on the remote mountaintop, if he was going to do this he had to go now, the helicopter was standing by to film the event but they were on a tight timeline due to fuel limitations and the unpredictable wind and weather patterns in these mountains. Rob could not even see the slope that he intended to ski down, once he was over the edge far enough to see the slope below it would be because he had left his perch and was in freefall. Even though he couldn't see it now, he knew every inch that he would be covering, he, Ben Davis and Chad Brixby had photographed every inch of the slope from the air and went over everything in detail. If he made it to the bottom in one piece they would have loads of film from several different camera angles including the Helicopter and a drone that would be filming from above. If he made a mistake that too would be recorded for any future attempts, if he did not make his cuts in the correct locations, or if they had missed an outcropping just beneath the powder, then this might be his final minutes to live.
Rob glided off the precipice and began his decent, he concentrated on the landing, one step at a time he thought. The snowpack was rapidly approaching and Rob corrected his posture slightly and angled his skis for the landing, and then he was speeding down the incline, a section that was so steep that it would have been nearly impossible to climb. There was no time to think, Rob just watched for his landmarks, counted off seconds and reacted. Interestingly he didn't have time to fear or even get caught up in the moment either, all of his senses was totally concentrated on that one effort to stay on his line and not deviate, he was totally in the zone and there was nothing else but the task at hand, ski to live, or fail and suffer the consequences.
Gail was waiting for him at the lodge, she could not bear to watch in person what had been all the talk in the small resort town. Only one other skier had ever attempted what Robby was trying, and that event had ended very badly. Gail was a good skier in her own right, but she didn't have one daredevil bone in her body. This need for an adrenaline rush was what she hated about being with Robby, but it was also what had attracted her to him. He was a thrill seeker, and she liked the fact that he considered her his ultimate thrill. But that did not stop him from trying the near impossible, he was not happy unless he was working on something that would require him to risk it all.
She heard the helicopter in the distance and went to the largest window in the lobby to try to catch sight of it. She let out a sigh of relief, good, the helicopter was headed back to the resort's helo pad and not on to the city and a hospital, so everything had gone well then. There would be a huge celebration party tonight paid for by the sponsors, Gail looked down at her hands and saw that they were shaking. She would have to pull herself together and go meet him, then Robby would take her back to the room for a pre-celebration celebration. A few days, maybe a month or even two, and then it would be on to the next big thing.

**Disclaimer: I often use the freewrite prompt to tell a story instead of doing a pure freewrite, so they sometimes take longer than 5 minutes and usually have some editing. But I try to do my story straight through at one sitting without any unnecessary breaks.

Me thinks that you have done a bunch of things in your life :)
to be able to write in so much detail about...so many things.
I have met a lot of wonderful and very interesting people from all walks of life, and I have read a lot of books. That is not to say that I haven't led an interesting life and done some unusual things, but what I write is mostly from my imaginings. When I read a book it is not like I'm listening to someone tell a story, it is that I'm living in the story. That is why it takes me so long to read, no speed reading for me I would get nothing out of that. So if you think about my life on those terms, then you can see that I actually have been to many places and I've done a lot of different things in my own mind. I tend to do this with movies also, that is why I like to be alone with no distractions when I watch a good movie. But it is also why I turn most of the modern movies off after just a few minutes, who wants to live life through some of the sick minds that they film about today? Take me on an adventure, teach me something new, give me a realistic "What if" in a movie and I'm happy. 😎
I am definitely not the thrill seeking, dare-devil type. People often respond with "You only live once." Exactly. So why shorten it? Great writing as usual.
The Crazy Train to Freewriteville is leaving for the next prompt. Would you like a single pass or a multi pass? All aboard!

Weekend Freewrite 2/10/2018- Part 1 - The First Sentence
Are you a skier? I enjoyed this freewrite. It made me think of isolation.
I always wanted to ski, and when I was a teenager skiing was my favorite part of the Winter Olympics. But it almost never snowed where I grew up and there were very few mountains high enough to even have a decent slope to ski down. I had planned on learning how when I lived in Idaho, but I worked almost all of the time, and besides, I started seeing the terrible skiing accident injuries that some of the people I worked with incurred, I'm no chicken by nature, but I said no thanks to learning another dangerous sport lol. 😉

Amazing Idea of the post I Resteemed your post
A freeride in a freewrite! It was a very detailed and vivid description that I got inspired and went watching snowboard launching themselves from the top of mountains. I'm not at that level but thanks to you I will write my entry, thanks Deacon.. I was a bit tired but you gave me the energies 😉👍
