Claus Ogerman and Michael Brecker - In the Presence and Absence of Each Other (Part 1) - Music - Jazz
"Cityscape" is a collaborative album from composer, conductor and arranger Claus Ogerman, and sax player Michael Brecker, that I've come to know relatively recently, and I'm so glad I have. Conceived by Ogerman as a concerto for tenor sax and orchestra, it highlights Brecker's playing as the true sax master that he was, inspiring and moving throughout.
I've always loved tenor sax, and Brecker is at the top of his game here, in one of the most original and lyrical sax pieces it has ever been my pleasure to hear. The juxtaposition between Brecker's jazz sax improvisations and Ogerman's classical string section is pure magic, and the entire album is a little-known jazz gem.
Brecker also had a sax solo on one of the pieces on Ogerman's 1977 "Gate of Dreams" album, that I posted about a few days ago, and they followed this album up with "Claus Ogerman Featuring Michael Brecker," released in 1991.
