Tax: Freewrite #3 (601)

in #freewrite5 years ago

David couldn't worry about his taxes in the forest. If he did the weight of his failure to pay what he owed would hang over him, weigh him down like the mist that cast a shadow over the evergreen trees that poked out of the woods.

He trekked across the trickle of stream and pushed the thought from his mind. Or at least he tried to. I mean, he thought to himself, fuck the IRS. How could they have the power to interrupt his life with their demands. They didn't understand what he was going through, all the details of his miserable life which needed his time and attention and money.

His mother was in the hospital, dying. He knew she was dying, even though he tried to deny it. And in his denial he was paying big bucks to stave off the day when it would actually happened, though he knew it would eventually arrive.

Far away in the shroud of mist that darkened and chilled the air around him, like the pallor of his debt and the punitive measures brought by the IRS, which he couldn't even begin to imagine, he heard the loon crying.

The sound was lonesome and lost, yet it was beautiful. He saw the lake in his mind; it lay ahead of him through the trees. He pictured the loon, black and white, and he could see it more clearly in his mind than he knew he would when he arrived at the lake. Then he saw the tendrils of mist rising up from the water to meet the fog bank high in the sky.

He didn't know where it came from, but he was powerless to stop the feeling of uplift that came into him then.

Thank you. It was cool how I arrived at that last sentence right when my clock ticked over 5 minutes. I was aiming for a positive ending.
