Several Sightings -- Freewrite #7 (Day 709)
They saw the dolphin three times.
It leapt over the dock the first time, while they were watching the sea lions. Within minutes a crowd had gathered on the pier; no one had ever seen a dolphin in the marina before, and word traveled fast.
They didn't notice the most unusual aspect of this dolphin, however, until after it appeared the second time. It had a strange growth behind its dorsal fin. It was pink, some said, after it had poked its head above the water for just a second and then dove back into the depths. Others said it looked pasty white, like a red-headed white person.
The third time it came up – and the last time they saw it – it swam right next to the dock, from one end of the crowd to another. As it moved along, a muttering, a babbling, swept through the crowd like a wave in a football stadium. After the soft noise, there was complete silence.
The dolphin passed along the entire length of the dock before turning out toward the center of the marina. It had a human hand waving behind its dorsal fin.
Okay, I confess: the last sentence of this 5-minute freewrite was written a few beats after the alarm sounded on my phone. But, I knew where I was headed in the third paragraph, so I think it's fair to use – I had thought of the ending within five minutes; I just didn't type fast enough.
