Old Scratch (Part III) - a fiction tidbit for Freewrite #250 - core values
Greetings fellow Steemians! Here is my 62nd 5 minute freewrite. (Disclaimer: these usually take me significantly longer than 5 minutes to write). The prompt was "core values".

Old Scratch (Part III)
He reached into one of the many pockets of his parachute pants and procured a tiny glass vial, faceted on six sides, and stoppered with a cork. It was antique looking, but otherwise ordinary, even plain. And it was empty.
How anticlimactic, Rhonda thought. Maybe the guy really was just a crazy. But in that case... why were all of the little hairs on the back of her neck suddenly standing on end?
She gave the vial a second look. It was empty, yes, but not in the ordinary way. The emptiness almost seemed palpable. Concentrated. Like a vacuum for the soul...
"Wait!" she cried.
Too late. He'd already popped the stopper.
There was a rushing sound. Her head spun for an instant. And then everything went back to normal.
"May I help you?" she asked the man standing across from her. She couldn't shake the feeling that she'd seen him someplace before. He was smartly dressed, wearing a tailored business suit, a silk tie, and rectangular wire framed glasses. A little older, dignified, good-looking. He held a briefcase in one hand, and something else in the other. For an instant she thought she could see a tiny antique bottle, ornately carved, with fantastical creatures and mysterious symbols rendered in exquisite, painstaking detail, and containing some sort of liquid that pulsed and glowed in every color of the rainbow.
She blinked.
No, of course not. She must have got too much sun. It was just his wallet.
He smiled at her. "I think the blackberry jam will do nicely, thank you." His accent was cute. British.
"Ok, that'll be six dollars please."
"And your name? If it isn't asking too much..." He gave her a wry grin. "And also dinner. This evening perhaps? If it doesn't entirely go against your core values to date a man about whom you know only that he likes blackberry jam."
She blinked again, then smiled back at him. Well, this was unexpected. But she couldn't think of a reason why not...

I love the quirkyness (not sure that’s a word) of the characters :)
Thank you @megan.emerald! And thank you for following the story :) I thought this was going to be a three part series but it's taken an unexpected turn so... man, now I have no idea what to expect, or how many episodes it will go...
And yes, not sure about the spelling, but quirkyness is definitely a word ;D
