SMALL PACKAGE (5-minute Freewrite)

The small package fell with a thud onto the brick and concrete front porch. Fall leaves tumbled down from their perch to sit on the brown cardboard box like curious colorful birds. The cat lifted her head and looked through eyes as thin as slits in the blinds of a curious neighbor taking stock of the scene.

The delivery truck roared to life and wobbled down the narrow stone drive headed to its next destination. Far in the distance a child called to its friend and then laughter carried on the breeze.

A school bus arrived at the end of the lane to dispatch a small child onto the street. The child rushed to the porch and tore open the box which contained their long awaited costume.

It seemed as if Fall had arrived with the small package. The quiet porch would soon become active with life - and after-life.
