PROMPT (5-minute Freewrite)

"Prompt," Gayle said.

Tony rolled his eyes. Rather, Polonius rolled his eyes. Nothing came from the wings. Someone in the audience coughed.

"Prompt," Gayle said. A bit louder, but still wheezed. Tony wondered if her asthma clogged the passages of her brain that were used to store lines.

They had been practicing Hamlet for over eight weeks. She still didn't have this line down yet? C'mon, even he knew her lines by now.

"Prompt!" A large man in the front row cleared his throat. As if to underscore Gayle's request for her next line.

Tiffany Clauson, Gayle's understudy, appeared at the edge of the stage curtain. Tony thought she looked flushed. Out of breath. And was her hair disheveled? He hoped not.

It had taken him the entire semester to work up the courage to ask Tiffany out. Tonight, at the after party, was his one last shot to make it happen.

"He hath, my lord, of late made many tenders of his affection to me," Tiffany mouthed from off stage.
