IRIS (5-minute Freewrite)

"Close your eyes again." The scientist observed as the artificial life contracted the portal which allowed light to reach the observational cortex. Everything appeared in working order. "And open."

The lithe robot raised a hand and rested it on her creator's shoulder. "Everything is going to be alright," she said.

"I know. But I worry. You'll understand one day, when you," he stopped mid-sentence. "No, I guess maybe you won't ever know what this feels like."

"When I return from Sagittarius-A with my findings, we can share more time together." Again, her tone and inflection mimicked sincerity. He knew better. He had programmed her.

"Yes, I suppose. Shutdown now, Iris. For packing and shipment to the star ship. Bon voyage."

The robot slumped as her systems went into hibernation for the long journey.

The scientist turned off the laboratory light as he left the room. He'd be long gone before she even reached the distant star.
