The dividend check landed on the large oak conference table, not with a thud but a whisper. An audible gasp followed.

"What happened to it all," asked Maribel Fisker.

The lawyer still leaned over the wide slab of varnished wood, his gaunt reflection pale as a ghost in the dark, glass-like coating. Of ghosts, there were more than a few about.

Uncle Reginald Barnes Harrilson, the third to be precise, had been dead just shy of eight months and the estate had just been closed. What remained of the sewer pipe and plumbing fixture mogul was scattered with the Santa Ana winds last Summer.

It now felt like the strong breeze had carried away much more than his ashes.
