DIRTY FEET (5-minute Freewrite)

Her small feet crushed brown crisp leaves with each step. Around her, the dense forest she played in since before she could walk gave comfort and peace. It was the familiar sounds, scents, and textures which soothed her eager heart.

On this day, unlike others in her past, the loam between her toes did more to nourish her soul than any hymn or verse. It was the forest around the one room clap board cottage that gave her strength and life. Just as, she assumed, it provided for all the creatures therein as well.

Her heart fluttered as she approached the creek. It was shallow, and narrow. A rivulet now, much less than the cascade at the break of spring. Here she would come to refresh in the heat of summer. Here she would collect fat crawfish for the pot before the fall. And it was here he had made his intentions known.

Meeting on one of the rare trips to town, her mother and father were eager for the betrothal to proceed. Didn't she know there would be more opportunities? Wasn't she excited by the prospect of life in the city?

How could they not see that she would miss having dirty feet?
