Why do we pay so much to be "beautiful"!?
It seems to be inate the world over. We are all consumers and so many of us are not happy in our own skin it seems..
Here in Ireland, lots of the girls I know wear fake tan to give the illusion of them having a nice golden tan. Or whenever the weather allows, they will be seen tanning themselves at the beach, with the rest of the nation, enjoying one of our seldom seen heatwaves!! Which is actually hyperbole of the highest order, as the last time we saw a temperature of 30 degrees celsius, Ireland was still part of Pangea!! Contrast this with some countries I visited in Asia, where the exact opposite is true. The pharmacies all stock whitening cream. So while in Ireland, the girls want that golden tan, 10,000km across the world, the girls want to be more white.
Why is that I wonder? Well I suspect the media is at the heart of it, They do not want you to be content, to be happy. Because, a happy person does not need that latest and greatest material object to make them happy. They don't want to change something about themselves to make them happy. The media are basically trying to sell us an alternative version of ourselves and push us to:

The models are always glamorous Adonis-like beauties, and the subtext is: Buy this and you too could be beautiful!
You are already beautiful, so put your wallet away!

Thanks @mysecondself01.. I think age has something to do with it too, I think as people age, the more comfortable they become in their own skin, and don't buy into things so easily.. They become a little more savvy I suppose :)
For me natural is beautiful So whether black or white. But yes, In Africa especially, there is so much women especially do, and buy, to lighten their skin. And it has to do with the media craze of models and such stuff.
I find that of course all to naught, but again, who am i? Talk of beauty being in the eyes of the beholder.

Couldn't agree more, natural all the way, every day @ebitularmbert . I have not yet visited Africa, but I hope to some day, but my experience was from Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Vietnam.. It was a real surprise to me to see these "whitening creams". Equally it is probably surprising to some tourists to Ireland when they see this fake tan for sale.. It's kind of like everyone wants to be someone else, even if that is just a different version of themselves, be it physical, emotional or materially.. Thanks for the new prompt, I'll sit down later and give it a go
Very good post. I totally agree with you on the media feeding us impossible dreams, although I must admit I like a tan, but we do have hot summer where I live and going to the beach is almost a must in summer..
Thanks for stopping by @marie-jay and I am the very same to be honest, I like a tan myself! Very difficult to get one in chilly Ireland mind you :o) But I do go to Spain on holiday most summers and am known to lounge around the pool with a few tunes and catch a few rays myself. It just struck me before years ago, the contrast between Ireland and SE Asia, so that thought popped into my head while doing this freewrite! It's so cool the random stuff and life experiences that pop into your head when #freewriting
I agree and I was going to get a fake tan Saturday for vacation and I canceled it (I will go white and proud!) I got my toes painted instead!
