For those of you not familiar with the freewrite, you basically have 5 minutes to write a story, beginning to end. Then post it to your page.

Below is my attempt to tell a story in 5 minutes using the prompt "Before midnight"

Thanks to @mariannewest as always for the wonderful job she does in keeping this going every day!

The prompt post can be found here

Why not give it a go yourself!!

When I saw this prompt, this image came straight to mind for some reason.

I happened upon it randomly a couple of weeks ago and I found it fascinating. So, I thought, hey some of my freewriting buddies may find it fascinating too, or maybe not! But, I'll chance it!!

In this illustration, the whole history of the Earth has been condensed into a 24 hour clock. From the moment the debris that was thrown out by a cosmic supernovae that coalesced together over millions of year to form the Earth to this moment of you sitting down reading what Ablaze is rabbiting on about today.. It's all captured in this really cool image, which really cleverly manages to convey the four and half billion year life of our planet into a little snapshot of time.

Note, midday is at the 6 O'Clock position and Midnight is at the 12 O'Clock position, so it does actually cover the full 24 hours, even at first glance you think that it doesn't..

We don't arrive on the scene until 23:58:43!!

The dinosaurs only arrived at 10:56, which really gives you some appreciation of how old this floating lump rock we call earth actually is!

I was quite surprised to see the origin of life as early as 4am and the first fossils at 6am.

So we got here at 23:58:43 and it's just gone midnight now, so how long will we last going into a new day?

Could we end up like the dinosaurs who were wiped out by a meteorite??

To be honest, I fear, we will do it ourselves.

Climate Change, Nuclear Weapons and Artificial Intelligence gone wrong are three scary dystopias that spring to mind. They are all very real and rational fears, and we may only see another few seconds on this clock if we don't collectively wake up and smell the coffee!!

This starts with electing the right leaders and above all educating ourselves..

That is too much intelligent information for my limited grey cells to take in today (worked a late last night and I'm still slow lol) When I'm with it again later today I'll have another read. I take it we're late on the scene and will be disappearing relatively soon in the scheme of things. I tell you what though - if humans disappear it's because we damn well did it to ourselves!! :-0

ha ha, I know how you feel with the late night work!! I do a lot of that myself, and I'm like a zombie sometimes :o)

I love anything like this! I'm glad you found it interesting as well, and thanks a lot for the new prompt..

This is amazing! Humans will be the only ones to screw everything up and that irritates the crap out of me.
Want to hear something ironic? When I wrote my freewrite tonight for (yellow) my life flashed in front me so fast and it felt weird. It was similar to this clock. OMG! And just now, I heard a big crash of thunder which I haven't heard since last summer. Is that freaky or what?

Just reading this now, as I was away for a long weekend with no internet... it was actually great to unhook for a while, but n ow I am glad to be back as well!! A nice break... I fully agree with you on the above, we will certainly screw it up on ourselves, I just hope we don't take too many other species with us when we do... Greed is the worst human quality, and that will be our downfall in the end I think...

That's freaky about the timing of the flash and then the thunder which you hadn't heard in so long... The earth is speaking to us!!

Sounds like you had a peaceful weekend, just enough to recharge your mind and body.

That is exactly what I was thinking. The earth must have been speaking to us because there was only the one thunder boom and no rain. Love it! : )
