Heaven is a dump - Freewrite

Attics are a museum of life and times gone by. Relics from the past, favourite childhood toys, school books from 1987, football boots from the bygone days of Georgie Best, crystal and china jostling for position. An impossible mix of tradition and times gone by. Many items used to have pride of place on a mantle-place, on a foot, the epicentre of children's fun and imaginations gone wild.

They somehow lost their appeal, were outgrown, were replaced and ended up in the cool, damp, lonely air of the attic. Faint echoes vibrating through the rafters from below are a reminder of a time when they were needed. Those far of days of youth, fresh from the shop, released from the grip of plastic packaging or cardboard box. Useful, worthwhile, warm, essential. Breathe in the admiration - they shined.

So different now, in this cold space, cut off. They all wish they were Christmas decorations, forgotten about for 11 months of the year, but then dusted down, brought to lower climbs, pride of place, the fresh and fragrant smell of pine, children playing, adored for 4 whole weeks. Bliss, fulfillment, relief, warmth.

Jim, the hoover has been here longer than anyone, and doesn't speak much anymore. There is a whole family of suitcases here that have called this space their home for too long to remember. Each carried a pockmark of imperfection, and were cast aside.

Then the day comes, half of us are released from this godforsaken place. The road trip in the skip is sublime, as the fresh air and rain infuse our cores. Our new home is magnificent, a metropolis of the forgotten, but best of all it's outside.

They call it a dump.

We call it heaven.
