Acrylic Shoot I

Acrylic Transparencies have interested me, and even more so when I discovered fluorescent and neon transparencies. They have this vibrant quality that feels like it is illuminating from behind. That's a really cool feature and I tried to capture elements of the acrylic with colored makeup in the first shoot.

The shoot began getting more creative and jumping into using more layers. But there wasn't enough time to experiment because we still wanted to get the shots of the original concept.

Concept

The concept of this shoot was to take what was learned in the Acrylic Shoot I and apply it to more layers of acrylic. Coming up with weird colors, contrasts, light blasts, etc.

And of course, it wouldn't be original without custom pieces that were cut out!

Casting

This was an interesting round for casting. I only casted two other people. I planned on putting a casting through a Facebook group that I'm a part of, and through model mayhem. The issue was that I didn't want too many people because I wanted plenty of time to spend on each person specifically. This ended up perfectly because of the setups we did. I had also planned on doing the shoot myself so had to subtract one from what was wanted. Basically I planned on three other models and myself.

At the shoot, we got rolling. Early on someone texted me saying they would be a little late. Well turns out they were a lot late, but showed up and took wonderful shots. One model also cancelled the day of. When you're doing this low budget shoot, this type of thing is to be expected. Over time, we'll hopefully build enough support to hire an agency model and take it slower with one or two select people.

Setting Up

At first, I was the stand-in.

And then came setups and experimentation.

Now using scrap pieces, and pair them with the pieces meant for the shoot, we're getting somewhere.

Again, it's truly amazing how the sides of the fluorescent sheets illuminate.

Okay, so we might have gotten carried away with the acrylic pieces. But this is where the magic started happening. When we started playing with not only color and shapes, but depth of field and angles it became that much more oddly beautiful.

At last, I realized you can't tell what it looks like when the flash hits. Part of the process I wanted to just show this one shot from the side, but using the wireless flash setup. With this you can see how the light hits him. Pretty interesting.

The configurations were all a blast. All of them probably represent 15 minutes of time each due to testing, checking with the camera, etc. Then if it works well with someone's particular skin tone.

Looking back, it seems I might be developing a shooting style with these acrylic sheets. Maybe there will be more of these particular shoots in the future.
