Week #18 Foxtales Contest: Rescue
Through his binoculars he could see a woman in obvious distress in the cove below the lighthouse. Jerry radioed for help, but there was no response! She was in grave danger; it would be dark soon and the incoming tide would soon flood the cove. Jerry simply had to act and act now! He ran down the 120 stairs as fast as his legs would permit and jumped into his 4x4. Using the normal route to the cove - would take too long. There was an off-road route, but it was risky. As he had feared there was no easy way onto the beach; he composed himself, before launching the vehicle downhill. It was now in free fall, Jerry was super-alert and trying to control the control-ables; but there was none! The vehicle came to abrupt halt, as it hit sandy shore. “Damn, that was bloody awful” he cursed. The jolt had shaken Jerry, and it took him a full minute to regain his senses. In a paradoxical twist, he saw the woman hobbling toward his vehicle “Are you alright sir?” she enquired. “I will have to be or we won’t be”, he responded with a wince. Jerry was instantly struck by her raw beauty, the type that put her on his radar (but this wasn't the time or the place). He got out of his vehicle and gently took her hand and led her over to the vehicle. Jerry bent down, “Let’s have a look at this leg of yours.” A Shiny object fell into the sand from his shirt pocket, “It’s my compass” he commented, “My dad gave it to me - I carry it for luck... Yip, this leg's pretty bruised, but no evidence of a break... We need to get out here” he urged, as he felt the cold water bridge his leather boots. The vehicle made a watery trail, until finally – dry sand...
