Sugar Mice - One Paragraph Short Story
She stood waiting, her eyes covered, her mouth open. It was just like when they were kids. The old tin of sugar confection, the illustration of a boy instructing his little sister to open her mouth, close her eyes, and await a sweet surprise. She felt like a little kid again, as her patience rewarded with a tiny sugar mouse. The sweet, solid nostalgia melted on her tongue. It was a little sickly, the pure sugar with a hint of lemon. Her mouth watered at the familiar taste. He reached into the tin, retrieving another mouse, he nibbled at the nose, before dangling it by the tail, dropping it into his mouth. She giggled as he turned to her, his eyes sparkling with his wicked grin, a red lace twitching between his lips. He always used to make her shriek in horror, pretending the sugar mouse had come to life in his mouth. A wriggling tail hanging out of his mouth, a sudden look of astonishment, followed by a hard snap of his jaws, and a look of satisfaction. She laughed into her hand, her mouth full of melting mouse. Their mum hadn’t made sugar mice very often, the work surface they dried on had been at eye level, at help yourself level. The sweet smell of warm sugar would seep through the house, a secret invitation for operation mouse swipe. Looking back, their over the top spy-rolls may have given them away, ungainly five and seven year olds, exaggerated tippy toes. Their mum didn’t feel well enough to get out of bed that often, days she made sugar mice in the morning were rare, good days. Days of laughter, playing in the park, days of hugs and adventure. Sunshine in the cloudy days of listless misery that normally haunted the house. For a long time, any thought of her mother, cut her deep to the core, draining the joy out of her heart. It had been a good idea to make sugar mice, to laugh and smile together, and remember their mum before depression ate away at her.
This is my second entry to @vermillionfox 's one paragraph story contest
Something about this prompt really reminded me of a vintage sweet tin in my mums house, the old fashioned image of the older boy who could reach the sweet tin sneaking sweets to his sister. The phrase 'open your mouth and close your eyes, something something sweet surprise' was on the side of the tin, and after much googling, I can't find the original one, but that is more to do with rule 34

Ooo that is really interesting, I didn't actually like the first one that much, I wrote four entries and was going to drop that one and enter a story of a dude having had his face remodeled as a woman but she talked me into posting the first one despite my misgivings! Although she was also trying to get me to write a sexy story, given potential of the image lol - I can't wait to see what you come up with ;)
