Melting Copper

Hello again my friends!

Today I will continue to show my adventures with my homemade forge . In my first post I have shown how to make a forge and the end design was this one:

The whole post is here:

https://steemit.com/forge/@cynetyc/building-a-mini-forge-to-melt-metals-in-few-minutes-secrets-and-tips

So what I can say about this?

The design was good but not perfect. I had my pipe and the hairdryer blowing from a up but the angle and force can be improved to further increase the power of the forge.

To be able to have a greater temperature inside my forge I had to make a hole in the forge and then put the pipe inside of it.
I used the same materials and I can say the work perfect.
The original materials were:

  • sand
  • yellow dirt (clay)
  • water
This time I added about 20 to 25 % plaster to the whole mix the the result was walls strong as stone.

It looked like this:

Down you can see the hole for the pipe

What I melt is just tin cans that I had around

In this picture you can see some lead ingots that I made, they are preatty easy to make . I sugest for all that want to try melting lead to wear a gass mask . The mask is not good only for lead but for other materials as well.

Now in the next photo is something interesting !

This is aluminium dross and most of people just throw this away...
In my opinion this is wrong... because the point of melting metals is to reuse, recycle and/or sell them .
The dross can be reused and re-melted .

For this just throw it in the forge and over it put some borax to clean it during the melting process and you remove the extra dross and impurities during that time.

Now I waited one day and then I heated my forge and tested it! And it worked wonderfull!

Thank you for posting @cynetyc.

Such a skill....very interesting to see the workings of it. Appreciate you bringing this information to Steemit.

Wishing you and yours all the best. Cheers.

Thank you very much @bleujay ! It took me some time to make it but it works very good and I am proud of my work!

Thank you @olga.maslievich I am glad that you liked it !

Excellent job, it gave me a great idea to melt the aluminum
Thank you very much dear friend @cynetyc

Oh yeah @jlufer ! This portable forge is perfect for aluminum, lead, silver, brass, gold and copper .
I use charcoal to make the fire and I can say that in about 10 to 15 minute you can melt aluminum (about 25 to 30 min for copper ) . Olso I use a "trick" before I melt the metals... I heat my crucible and then put it in the forge.
In the same time I remove the melted metal I take out olso the hairdryer...because if I stop the air the heat will melt the hairdryer. At about 2000 degrees that would mean few seconds to do it .
And one last thing after each use the forge can be stored in any place with no problems. If you want to try at home I say go 100% . You can even make some shapes and art from aluminum. During the time of Napoleon the aluminium had more value then gold.

Thank you very much for all this information, here in my province is consumed many cans of beer so they abound on the street, to see your post, I came up with the idea of gathering and melting.
I appreciate all this information dear friend @cynetyc

Your new forge walls look good and solid! It would be neat to see you using the borax to clean the re-melted aluminum. I really like the look of your ingots, too! Nice work, @cynetyc!

Thank you @haphazard-hstead ! I made the shapes from a clay brick that resissts high temperatures and the same clay is in my forge too.

You're very welcome! Pretty soon we will see ingots with the Steem symbol on them! ; )

I didnt know about using borax to clean the dross. That's awesome. Please have a look at my first forge post.
