A Whirl Wind Day: Alaskan Froaging 7 Aug 2018

in #foraging6 years ago

We went looking for crowberries and found cranberries, blueberries, fireweed, watermelon berries and raspberries.

What a whirl wind trip! We didn’t even go that far either! We got soaked through though. It was raining 80% of the time we where picking.
We went up Hatcher Pass this time, it is a well known berry picking place. So much so you will see waves of women with berry rakes raping the land for all it has.

Anyways... On our way up we stopped at an old bridge pull out.

We found a TON of watermelon berries!

We originally went up Hatcher Pass to look for crow berries. They are normally up at the top.
But we didn’t have to all the way up, the hubby(@alaskatactical) spotted some blues out the window. Normally where there are blues there are crows too.

So we all got out and scouted.
We found crowberries, low bush blue berries and low bush cranberries

The crow berries(black in color) are as big as the blue berries.

After a bunch of people stopped to be lookey lues, one was actually my husbands friend. We headed up the hills more.

At this point everyone was gettin chilled, only three of us had hoodies.
So it was time to head back to the car and go home.

On our way back down we seen the old mine.

I tried to zoom in but the clouds and the quality wasn’t that greats. Sorry.

We ended up coasting most of the way down, super nice because we where down to one bar of gas.

Then the hubby wanted to see the flood level creeks and rivers. Sigh. We ended up getting fireweed flowers at this stop.

Then back onto the road again.
I wanted to check a place I had seen last fall. It had raspberry bushes.

Score! Check this out!

Yeah my hair was done and dead. Didn’t realize it was that bad. But I got berries!

We had to leave the second berry patch early because someone put out an SOS for a flooded basement.
So we loaded up, went to the house, grabbed the pump and helped them out. The basement had water up to mid thigh(about 3 foot deep). They where using a bucket to bale them selfs out. After hooking the pump up and running it, it took about 5 mins.

After that is was about 8pm or 9 pm. We started a fire in the fire place because we where soaked clean through! Then while my girl cooked spaghetti, the boys helped sort the raspberries for making jam.
We ended up with about two cups of yucky berries, I threw them out into an area we picked for regrowth. 🤞🤞

Thinking about going to a you pick farm here locally that has more raspberries. The hubby can’t have the micro seeds, but he is craving raspberries. So I will be straining a lot of seeds out.

It was a busy day, a whirl wind kinda day. But the good kind.

That was a good berry picking adventure!
Those mountains are pretty impressive, they look like they're above the tree line.
Was that bridge originally for cars or a railroad?

Thanks! Originally for cars, yeah the mountain pics are above the tree line. The clouds were rolling in. It was so beautiful!

Sounds like quite an adventure you had there, i love some of the photos you have of the trip , im particular the overgrown bridge right at the start. There is something about finding places and structures that are run down, have been neglected and overgrown that draws me in. I think it is because i use my imagination to envision what they looked like when they were first completed, were in their prime, and as they became forgotten :)

Good job on helping the guys with the flooded basement as well !!! you guys are just regular superheroes :) and what a reward for the great adventure all them berries are a great bounty :)

Sweet! Thanks!
I loved the bridge too, it was not safe to cross or I would have. Very few boards were left.
